Polls and Surveys
What and how you teach depends on who your students are and their readiness to learn. Students’ prior knowledge, misconceptions, attitudes and beliefs toward the content, their preferred learning styles, and their interests inform your teaching. An excellent way to learn about your students and their current learning situation is through a survey.
It is critical that students know how to collect, interpret, use, and share data. Polling tools provides opportunties for students to collect data, understandin how to turn data into evidence, and make conculsions based on findings.
Why Poll or Survey Students?
Poll or survey students to determine:
- Prior knowledge, individually or collectively
- Show students one or a series of images and have describe what they see in photos.
- Do a gallery walk of different photos that asks students about their prior knowledge and what they are looking forward to learning.
- Create a 5-question quiz designed to unearth misconceptions.
- Attitudes toward content and learning
- Ask students to reflect on what they want to learn by having them rate statements according to which of the following is most important to you?
- Learning styles
- Have students complete a learning styles survey such as Learning Styles Online.
- Interests in subject matter
- Ask students to record one or two topics they would like to learn more about and use their responses to construct the unit outline.
