				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Teacher-librarians Constructing Understanding through Inquiry </em>is a strategic partnership between the Saskatchewan School Library Association (SSLA), a special subject council of the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation, and the Ministry of Education. The intent is to develop supports for instruction to be used by educators, particularly teacher-librarians, as they strive to understand and actualize their role in an inquiry-based learning environment.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The partnership invited educators to participate in the live webinar series for Inquiry. I was honoured to share ways inquiry can be enriched through the use of technology, such as developing questions, information seeking, reflecting, documenting, assessing, and presenting learning.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">The Saskatchewan Ministry of Education&#8217;s renewed curricula emphasizes the development of an inquiry stance – the fostering of “inquiring habits of mind that lead to deeper understanding of their world and human experience” (<em>Saskatchewan English Language Arts Curriculum</em> 2009).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">As curricula advocates a “shift from a transmission-oriented pedagogy to a more open, inquiry-based mode of teaching and learning” (Bruce and Bishop, 2002), the ideal learning environment must now be characterized as flexible and adaptive to the changing needs of the learners. The construction of learning must be communal and dynamic, welcoming and valuing each member’s experiences and perspectives. Learning, due to its non-linear structure and student focus, is “messy” as learners critically investigate their unique questions apply understandings to new situations, create new knowledge, share learnings, and participate ethically and productively, using diverse methods and media. This active search for meaning and understanding undergirds inquiry.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Dingbats are decorative characters or ornaments attached to keyboard letters. The ‘BlackJack’ font and the ‘2 Peas Love Me’ dingbats are  popular fonts.</p>
<h3>Open An Image Editor</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">There are many choices of image editors, such as Photoshop, Aviary, Pixlr and Picasa. <a href="http://picasa.google.com/" target="_blank">Picasa</a> is free, and it will import and recognize all of the fonts installed on your computer.</p>

<h3><strong>Grab a High Resolution Image</strong></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A high resolution image is needed so when printed, the images and the fonts are clear and crisp. Import the image into Picasa and use the “Edit in Picnik” tool to resize. It is advised to size the vertical image to 2000 pixels by 2500 pixels for 8” x 10” printable art. To make it easy, download this <a href="http://c497280.r80.cf2.rackcdn.com/2011/08/high-res-white-page.jpg" target="_blank">plain white high resolution image</a> and start with that.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Start Creating</strong></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Once you have your high resolution plain white image, open it in Picasa and begin creating with the basic font tool.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">For example, to create signage about the fall season, change the background to an autumnal colour. To change the background, choose “Auto Color” under Basic Fixes and then choose “Tint” under Effects. Select any color background from that tool.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Next, lay out fonts, as seen below, with the Edit Text function. Picasa allows the user to increase or decrease the size of the font with one click and drag, and also tilt the words in any direction, whether it s diagonal or vertical.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Choose appealing fonts or words.  The following example is a ‘Autumn Favorites’ printable created in Picasa by <a href="http://www.centsationalgirl.com">Centsation</a> using different fonts and changing up the colours for added variety. </p>
