HOMESTAY

Students studying in the Saskatoon International High School Program have the opportunity to participate in the homestay program.

Accommodations for students will be arranged in safe and secure family homes, within close proximity schools and public transportation.

Students’ interests, personalities and needs will be matched with those of host families. Our Homestay Coordinator is available for consultation with students, families, schools and agents.

Living in homestay is one of the most valuable and productive elements of a truly authentic experience of living and studying in Canada!

Why?
Because living with a Canadian family will help you hear and speak English in a natural manner, away from the pressure of a classroom. You will also see what everyday life is like in a Canadian home through the customs and daily routines.

What kind of family will I stay with?
Many kinds of families are available to us, some with younger children, some with older children, some with no children in their home. Some have pets, some do not. They will all be as close to your school as can be arranged. The Homestay Coordinator goes through the information you provide on your personal student profile to match you with a very suitable home.

Will I have my own room?
Yes. All our families are in private, single-family houses, and they know that you need your private space. You will have to make your own arrangements about long-distance calls (we recommend buying a phone card), but most families will have internet and allow you to send regular e-mails to friends and family. You will be treated like a real member of the family - including expecting you to help with minor chores around the house! - but on the other side the family will show a real interest in how you are doing in school and Saskatoon.

What if they give me food I don't like?

Getting used to food in a new country can sometimes be difficult, and the homestay families know this. They will try to work with you to make you comfortable, but if any serious problems come up about this or anything else in the home, tell the Homestay Coordinator who has the experience to sort out the difficulties with you and the family.
