  6. Canada’s Virtual Museums The Virtual Museum of Canada celebrates the stories and treasures that have come to define Canada over the centuries.   7. Canadian Social Studies Journal. Canadian Social Studies is an indexed, refereed journal published quarterly on-line at the University of Alberta. It is a journal of comment and criticism on social education and publishes articles on curricular issues relating to history, geography, social sciences, and social studies.   8. Earth Album. Earth album is a simpler, slicker Flickr mash-up that allows you to explore some of the most stunning photos in the world courtesy of Google maps and Flickr. To begin your journey, just click somewhere on the map, e.g. "India".   9. Ease History. A group at Michigan State University have created a new website called EASE History. It features over 600 videos and photographs from 1900 to the present. EASE History is a rich learning environment that supports the learning of US history, (but there are global themes).   11. Jeopardy PowerPoint. The Jeopardy PowerPoint can be an excellent tool to use in the classroom to review and/or learn new content. Students will appreciate its exciting and non-traditional teaching technique.   13. Maplandia.This site provides the searchable world gazetteer based on Google Maps, the most comprehensive online satellite imagery ever available. More than 2 000 000 places all over the world are divided into many geographical categories according to continents, countries and administrative regions.   17. NationMaster. A massive central data source and a handy way to graphically compare nations. NationMaster is a vast compilation of data from such sources as the CIA World Factbook, United Nations, World Health Organization, World Bank, World Resources Institute, UNESCO, UNICEF and OECD.   18. New Zealand in History. This site provides an overview of New Zealand history, commencing from the time of the separation of that country from the ancient continent of Gondwana, 80 million years ago. The URL is http://history-nz.org/index.html

  24. The John A. Macdonald Portal. A no-cost collaborative Web site dedicated to the life and career of Canada’s first Prime Minister. This portal contains, as well as a slate of supporting textual and image resources that can be used for student projects and book reports. Features chapter content and texts are locked against changes, but users are encouraged to share resources they think appropriate; the material in this portal can be used for non-profit educational use; they will be setting up an open area to feature uploaded student work.   25. The Exploration and Fur Trade of Canada. This site is about the fur trade in Canada and how it led to the exploration of the country and the formation of the oldest and largest company in Canadian history: Hudson’s Bay Company. In fact, the history of the fur trade, Hudson’s Bay Company and the exploration of Canada are so intertwined that they can not be separated.  This is an excellent companion to the new Online Canadian Encyclopedia (http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/). This Web site is an open collaborative wiki set up to mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of Québec, and is dedicated to celebrating the life and career of the founder of New France.   27. The Champlain Society Digital Collection. For almost 100 years, The Champlain Society has increased public access to Canada’s rich documentary heritage.   1. Calculus-Help. This website offers content for both advanced high school students and college calculus students. It continues to offer a practice problem just about every week that is answered in plain, everyday English the following week. The URL is   http://www.calculus-help.com/

  2. Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching. The centre is a focus for research and curriculum development in Mathematics teaching and learning, with the aim of unifying and enhancing mathematical progress in schools and colleges.   3. Construct 3D Shapes. A generator that prints a selection of models for the construction of common 3D shapes. Cube, cuboid, cone, regular pyramid, octahedron, rhomboid, tetrahedron, pentagonal prism and pyramid are included.  Be sure to check out some of the other areas of this site - there are some great special needs resources!   5. Geometry Shapes. A number of math interactives. The URL is http://www.learner.org/interactives/geometry/

  6. Create a Graph. For those of us who find working with Excel or other spreadsheet programs a challenge, or for those who want their students to create graphs quickly and easily with their data, Create-A-Graph is the answer. Users choose the type of graph they want (area, bar, line, pie), plug in your data, and a graph is instantly created! (The pie graphs are great for creating spinners for use in your Probability units!) What’s even better about this website is that the graph is created as a picture file (choose .jpg or .png file type) that can be copied and pasted into other documents or presentations, printed, or saved.   7. Graph It!. This cool tool provides a functional online graphing calculator. The Graph Applet has all the common operators and functions as expected from any scientific calculator and combines it with function graphing capabilities. The calculator has the ability to graph the hyperbolic functions and symbolically differentiate functions in one variable, making it an excellent tool for higher-level algebra and calculus students.   9. Interactive Mathematics. Interactive Mathematics was a three-year National Science Foundation-supported project designed to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-8 emphasis).   13. A Maths Dictionary. Australian teacher, Jenny Eather, wrote this animated, interactive dictionary for students which explains over 400 common mathematical terms in simple language. The URL is  http://www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/

  14. Math eBoard (Portage Public Schools). Looking for a one-stop shop for mathematics resources?  Thhis site offers up a vast collection of math resources.  This eboard contains almost 20 different categories such as “Math Literature for Kids” and “Math Humor.”  Definitely worth a visit!   15. Math Problem Generator. Math Problems is used to construct a set of simple arithmetic problems. You can choose the number of problems presented, as well as the types of questions asked. Fill in all of the boxes and then hit the Submit button to generate the problems.   16. Math 10 Pure. Lance Burns has a new website out there for Math 10 Pure. It includes notes for the students, practice quizzes that are java based (so they are interactive), and questions that are supported by video answers. The URL is http://argyll.epsb.ca/lburns

  18. Paper Models of Polyhedra. Everything you ever needed to know about polyhedra (and more)! Polyhedra are beautiful 3-D geometrical figures that have fascinated philosophers, mathematicians and artists for millennia. On this site are more than eighty paper models available for free.   20. Ron Blond’s Mathematics Glossary. Ron Blond is an EPSB teacher, seconded to Alberta Education. He is working on a Math Glossary for Alberta Math. It is organized by divisions.   21. Real World Math with Google Earth. Real World Math uses Google Earth in the Math Curriculum providing lessons, activities, and new ideas that bring math instruction into this millennium. Intended for grades 5 and up, this material offers an Instructional Technology approach to learning.   23. The Maths Internet Guide. This website showcases math websites carefully chosen for their interactivity and grouped into five search categories.   24. The Math Website.   25. The Teacher’s Lab The goal of the Teachers’ Lab is to provide teachers and educators with a deeper understanding of commonly taught math and science concepts. Many of the Labs are based upon professional development workshops broadcast on the Annenberg/CPB Channel. Each lab will combine online activities with background information, interactive polls or worksheets participants can use in their classroom, plus links to related material. The Teachers’ Lab is funded by the Annenberg/CPB Math and Science Project and provided free on its website, Learner.org.   26. Visual Math Learning. This site features a free online interactive tutorial for pre-algebra students that is rich in games, puzzles, and other visual media content.  It is an excellent resource for parents and educators of students at the middle-school level.  Access to the tutorial requires no fee or registration.   11. Miss Barker’s “English” Castle. Rocky Mountain House teacher, Nona Lynn Barker created the site for her students, however, she had teachers request information too. Sonnet Central is an authoritative site that provides many resources for teachers.  It contains an archive of English sonnets, commentary, and relevant web links and a forum for poets to share and discuss their own work.   16. Stories, Folklore, and Fairy Tales. This CLN Theme Page has links to two types of resources related to the study of Stories, Folklore, and Fairy Tales. Students and teachers will find curricular resources (information, content...) to help them learn about this topic.   17. VOA Pronunciation Guide. Need help pronouncing the name of the Sultan of Brunei, Muda Hassanal Bolkiah, or the city of Zamboanga in the Philippines? This site from the Voice of America provides guidance in pronouncing names of both people and countries. I found it when I was searching for the correct pronunciation for the name Elie Wiesel, the author and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Included are the names of many newsworthy people from all over the world, as well as place names. Each has a phonetic pronunciation and an accompanying audio

  20. WordNet. An online lexical reference system whose design is inspired by current psycholinguistic theories of human lexical memory. English nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are organized into synonym sets, each representing one underlying lexical concept. Different relations link the synonym sets. Biodiversity HotSpots. “The most remarkable places on earth are also the most threatened.”  This site provides an extensive look at some of earth’s most vulnerable locations.  Well worth a look, even if you’re not able to use it in class!   9. Encyclopedia of Life. The Encyclopedia of Life is an amazing project not due to be completed for 10 years but available soon for what is started. The goal to is to have a web page for every species on the planet! The URL is http://www.eol.org

  10. Encyclopedia of the Atmospheric Environment. An excellent resource for environmental information at all levels. The site has information on global warming, acid rain, ozone, atmosphere. The URL is http://www.ace.mmu.ac.uk/eae/

  11. Fear of Physics The site authors created this site to be a friendly, non-technical place for you to come and “play” with the laws of physics for a while.   12. Genetic Science Learning Center. This site has some great info on DNA replication, transcription, translation and good animations. Stem Cells are also well explained. The URL is http://gslc.genetics.utah.edu/

  13. Human Genetics - A Worldwide Search. The Center for Improved Engineering and Science Education is about to ask a lot of people all over the world which traits they have. One way for students to learn how their physical characteristics, or traits, are inherited is by gathering a great deal of information about specific, easily-seen human features. Students can analyze this information to determine which traits are controlled by dominant genes and how often such dominant genes occur. During this project, students will complete surveys, formulate hypotheses,

  16. MIT Course Materials for High School (AP). A collection of no-charge resources provided by MIT. Show science demonstrations by MIT faculty in your classroom. The site is intended to provide alternate explanations to reinforce key concepts. Some examples might include: showing science demonstrations by MIT faculty in your classroom, providing alternate explanations to reinforce key concepts, and guiding students to additional homework problems and exam examples. MIT suggests that you can use this site to help your students understand concepts by watching video demonstrations, study for AP exams, and sample the kind of work they’ll be doing in college.   17. Newton’s Castle. Explore Newton’s Castle to learn about his discoveries and secret life.  Learn about color, optical illusions, observations from nature and fascinating facts about how cars roll up hill and why dogs chase cars.  There are several Project Legal (TIPS) lessons included regarding copyright and censorship issues and a Newton Timeline.   18. Nikon’s Universcale. We are able to view all entities, from the microworld to the universe, from a single perspective. Physical Science Activity Manual. “During the Summer of 1995 a group of Tennessee teachers participated in an intensive two-week program presented by CESME in which they were trained in the use is the Learning Cycle and the PSAM.   24. The Teacher’s Lab The goal of the Teachers’ Lab is to provide teachers and educators with a deeper understanding of commonly taught math and science concepts.   9. Freesound recordings. A collaborative database of Creative Commons licensed sounds. There are a ton of source sounds, from instrument samples to field recordings of anything imaginable, all uploaded by anyone who wants to contribute, and all available to incorporate into music or soundscape or whatever for free (as long as you attribute sounds used to their creators).  This would be a great resource for someone incorporating something like garageband into a music curriculum, also a great place to share field recordings if a class was doing a recording project.   2. Audacity. Audacity is a free sound editor that allows the user to record, edit and export sound files. Audacity allows cutting, copying and pasting of an unlimited number of sound tracks of virtually unlimited time and size. It imports and exports in multiple formats and, with the addition of a plug-in, downloadable free from another site, will export to MP3 as well. It runs on

  4. Cooltext Graphics Generator. This is a neat tool to create text banners for printable student work, PowerPoint presentations, websites, videos, or any digital student product. Cool Text is a free graphics generator for web pages and anywhere else you need an impressive logo without a lot of design work. Simply choose what kind of image you would like.   5. Clipart for Students and Teachers. An absolutely great clipart collection for teachers from Florida’s Educational Technology Clearinghouse. They have put together a collection of more than 34,000 pieces of high quality clipart. Teachers and students can use up to 50 items without further permission. It’s pretty high quality stuff - not the sort you get with your uh, “Office” suite… Make sure you click on option 2, the Site Map, otherwise, it’s not clear that there’s more than the small collection presented at the front end.   7. Digital Saskatchewan This is a collection of copyright friendly images, videos and sound files. They can be used by students and teachers for any non-profit purposes.
