PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Happy New Year to each of you from staff and students at Mount Royal. We trust that each of you had a healthy and restful Holiday season.
As we complete the first semester we look forward to what the new semester brings, new hope, new challenges and new beginnings. Mr. Clint Neudorf, and Mrs. Marion Murawsky will join our teaching staff for the second semester. Both have been part of our Mount Royal team in the past. We also welcome back Mrs. Kristi Janzen and Mrs. Kristie Palmer who are returning from parenting leave. In December, we bid farewell to our hard working interns. They included Mr. Boleski, Miss Eckl, Mr. Reis, Mr. Pulfer, Mr. Tate-Penna, Mr. Taylor and Miss Thoner. They contributed greatly to the Mustang community during their respective internships. We wish them well as they complete their schooling and head into teaching careers.
Winter activities continue with our Basketball and Wrestling teams representing our school well at each event. Frosh and Junior Basketball seasons will culminate with year-end tournaments in the coming weeks. Senior Basketball teams will be involved in playoffs in early March. Good luck to all involved. The Wrestlers will be off to High River Alberta the end of January and will see lots of tournament action over the next few weeks. City championships for wrestling will take place in mid March. We look forward to defending our Provincial title this year. We are looking ahead to our second annual Mustang Mania cheerleading extravaganza, which will take place February 26. Teams from near and far will participate again this year. Come out and support this event on the 26th.
As we begin semester two we are already starting our preparations for 2005-2006 year. Visits to our neighbourhood elementary schools have been completed, and we look forward to grade eight students and parents visiting our schools for our Open House on Thursday, February 10 at 7:00 P.M. On this evening we will be able to highlight our schools program to prospective grade eights. We hope that they will all give Mount Royal serious consideration when choosing a high school. Pre - registration for next year for our current students will be happening in the last two weeks of February. Watch for the information and be sure to have all forms in on time. This is the first crucial step in ensuring we are staffed to meet the needs of our young people come fall. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
We encourage parents/guardians to continue to be involved in the education of your student. Visit us during parent teacher interviews on March 24 (6:30 – 9:00 P.M.) or March 25 (1:30 – 3:30 P.M.). We welcome your participation.
For the staff,
On behalf of the staff,

Basil Hughton
Principal

MDA 9
The MDA 9 have completed a very successful first semester with a Medieval Feast, Elizabethan Newspaper and a week of finals. Students will benefit from the integration of math, science and information processing in the second semester. This compression allows the students to gain a level 10 credit,. In English MDA 9, the focus will be on prairie poetry and novel studies. In March, we will attend the overdue Persephone play.
Fundraising is still ongoing. The students held a bottle-drive on January 8th. Thank you to the Sopher family for hosting the event and to the many parents who contributed their time and vehicles. At the beginning of February we will be doing another fundraiser. We are getting closer to our ultimate goal of "Springtime in the Rockies".

MUSTANG OF THE MONTH
"Mustangs of the Month" is an exciting new program designed to recognize the contributions and achievements of students at the school. Each month staff can nominate students who feel they have contributed to the school in any number of ways. A committee then chooses four students for each month. The students’ photo and a description of their contributions is displayed in the showcases at the front of the school. Each student also receives a t-shirt to honor their selection.
DIVERSITY CLUB
The Diversity Club helps promote and recognize human rights and cultural acceptance within the school. It celebrates in our school the United Nations’ days such as International Women’s Day, International day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and Human Rights Day on December 10th, 2004.
December 10th was celebrated as "Holding Human Rights in our Hands". This year all classes made posters with tracings of their hands and conveyed messages of the rights and freedoms everyone should have, but do not, because of different circumstances such as political issues.
Also on December 10th three members of the Club, Sarah Lee, Ryleigh Carr and Susan Thai, together with teachers, Mrs. Cummings and Ms. Gryba, attended a luncheon at the Quality Hotel. The luncheon was sponsored by the City and many groups and organizations were there. There was a discussion panel about human rights and how some people are being discriminated against because of their skin colour or culture.
Watch for an upcoming school event to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th, 2005.
COUNSELLORS’ CORNER
Counsellors are busy with a variety of things throughout January and February. Topping the list would be assistance for students finishing Semester One. This includes coordinating extra help and adjusting Semester Two timetables.
Involvement with the registration process for Grade 8 students in our ten area elementary schools is underway. Programming, recommendations for Grade 8’s, updating Grade 8 staff, helping with our big annual Open House on Thursday, February 10th and interviewing each of the "area" Grade 8 students is how we’re involved.
Post-secondary applications for Grade 12’s are in high gear. These students, if they haven’t done so already, are asked to involve our Student Services office for information and support in this critical process. This would include scholarship applications …. NOTE: The University of Saskatchewan awards deadline is February 15th, 2005.
Royal West is now accepting applications from students 18-22 years of age who are interested in obtaining their grade 12 standing. For further information please call 683-7532 or visit us on our website at http://schools.spsd.sk.ca/royalwest.
