Royal Mentors, a program involving 15 teachers and over 300 Grade 9 students,
just finished an exciting first year. The program was designed to create an
opportunity for grade 9 students to be matched with a Mentor teacher and 18
other students for their high school career. The Royal Mentor program, which
met 2-3 times a month, mixed together students from different elementary schools
and provided valuable information and support to ease the transition to high
school. Guest speakers spoke about the pressures of gang involvement, the
responsibility and consequences of drinking and then driving, and the importance
of making positive lifestyle choices.
Royal Mentor students celebrated International Womens Day, designed
posters symbolizing peace and humanity, and discussed study tips as final
exams approached in January. All were active in April as the Royal Mentor
groups challenged each other by being "In Motion" and eating nutritionally.
The program finished on a high note with all 15 groups participating in the
Royal Mentor Challenge on the football field. After an hour of relays, team
building, mental challenges, and get down and get dirty Tug-o-wars, all those
involved in the program enjoyed their Dilly Bars.We look forward to next year
as the Royal Mentor program will be expanded to include both the grade 9 and
grade 10 levels. Thank you to all teachers and students for their efforts
and enthusiasm this year.

West Nile Virus - Reducing The Risk
West Nile Virus (WNV) is a virus that can cause disease in people, birds, horses
and other domestic animals. This virus is spread by the bite of an infected
mosquito. Many species of mosquitoes inhabit Saskatchewan, but only a few of
these species are infected with the West Nile Virus.
One way to control the spread of WNV is to control the mosquito population.
Eliminating breeding areas in your yards or preventing the larvae from developing
into adults will control their numbers. Even a small amount of standing water
will provide the chance for mosquitoes to breed. Standing water is water that
sits in an area for more than a week, and does not move or flow. Mosquito eggs
and larvae can develop in any amount of standing water if left for more than
4 days. To stop this from occurring:
If you are unable to eliminate all sources of standing water on your property
and there are mosquitoes breeding in the water, you can control the mosquito
population by applying a larvicide. Larvicides are chemical or biological agents
that are applied directly to standing water where mosquito larvae live. They
control mosquito populations by preventing the larvae from developing into adults.
Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (Bti) is a biological larvicide
that is approved for use on private property. Bti is a bacterium, which is specific
to insect larvae of mosquitoes and blackflys, and does not affect birds or animals.
It is applied in granular form to the standing water. Follow the directions
on the label before applying larvicides.
Finally, remember while you are working in your yard or just enjoying the results
of your work, mosquitoes may be around even if you do not see them. Protect
yourself by using an insect repellent and have a great summer!
