Principal's Message

How time flies. It is almost mid-term. We have just completed another successful round of parent teacher interviews and it will soon be time for marks and report cards. You should watch for these important progress reports on April 17. As this school year winds down, and the weather warms, I continue to be impressed with the contributions that students and staff make to our school. The enthusiasm displayed by our students in school activities is worthy of commendation, and helps to further our reputation as a school with lots to offer. We value this commitment and we count on it.

Over the past few months, a number of our school teams have represented our school community extremely well. Basketball has come to an end and our teams had fun and enjoyable seasons. Our Senior and Junior Cheerleading squads both captured the City Championships with excellent showings. Their seasons culminated on the evening of March 13th in front of a capacity crowd here at Mount Royal. The Wrestling team was successful in defending their City Championship from last year with a thrilling victory at E.D. Feehan on March 19th. Troy Lange, Jacky Mak, Brandon Menke, Jordon Marcotte, Holly Lawrence and Chris Kulbida won individual gold medals. Troy and Jacky went on to win Provincial Gold Medals on the weekend of March 29th. Badminton is well underway and Track and Field has just begun. Thanks to our coaches and supervisors for their hard work and dedication to our athletic teams.

In the coming weeks we will have our Dessert Night where we will be entertained by music, literary and drama groups. This exciting evening will take place on Friday, April 11th beginning in the library. Get your tickets early, as it is always a popular event. Graduation will soon be upon us. June 23rd is our date and grads will be hearing more about things in the upcoming weeks. Planning for the ceremony, banquet, dance and after-grad is well underway.

Thanks to all of you for your continued support of our school and community. Please feel free to drop in or give us a call. We always look forward to hearing from you. Together we will make a difference.

For the staff,

Basil Hughton
Principal

FOLLOWING THE 'STANGS!
Congratulations to Charlene MacKenzie and Jennifer Mack for receiving a federal bursary to attend a French Immersion university course at the University of Alberta in Edmonton this summer. They are both in grade 12 and are Core French Grade 12 students. Felicitations!!!

PERSEPHONE CLUB
Our club is winding up its first full season. We have met to discuss and attended five plays and spent time talking to the actors after each production. After viewing serious, heavy tragedies and light, fluffy comedies, we are much more informed theatre goers! We have forged a friendly relationship with the folks down the road in professional theatre. We look forward to our last play coming up on April 16th. It will be a treat to finish the season with Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, a musical.

DESSERT NIGHT
Students are eagerly working to prepare for the 8th Annual Spring Festival of the Arts.
Tickets go on sale April 1st-4th. For only $6.00 we invite you to enjoy delicious desserts, fruit trays and a variety of beverages. Entertainment includes an art display, musical selections, literary readings, school choir and a drama production.
Tickets sell out quickly. Get yours from Ms. Kwasnik-Senger in room 101 soon!

ROYAL WEST CAMPUS

The second Semester has started off on a great footing. The numbers were at 172 the first week of the semester,
which is exciting!

The other exciting thing thus far in the semester was a recent Professional Development visit to Centre High in Edmonton. The Royal West staff gained many insights into how Edmonton's program for older students operates. It is highly acclaimed. We hope to adopt some of their innovative ideas into Royal West's already successful programming.

STUDENT CHILD CARE SERVICES

Saskatoon Student Child Care Services Opens a Second Child Care Centre for Young Parents - Royal West Early Learning Centre

On February 14th, 2003 Saskatoon Student Child Care Services, a non-profit registered charity, held the Grand Opening of its second program, the Royal West Early Learning Centre. The Centre is located at Royal West Campus, formerly Estey School. The Honorable Eric Cline brought greetings from the Province. Trustee Dan Danielson spoke on behalf of the Saskatoon Public Board of Education. In addition to grants from the Muttart Foundation and Saskatchewan Social Services, many Saskatoon businesses contributed to the development of the Centre. Representatives of the various companies were in attendance to receive thanks for their support. The Centre would not have succeeded without them. Their contributions are recognized on a permanent donor's board displayed at the entrance to the Centre.

Mount Royal teacher John Taras, a board member of Saskatoon Student Child Care Services, was presented with a framed print recognizing his extraordinary contribution to the project. The majority of his summer was spent securing donations and assistance from Saskatoon businesses. The Centre would not have opened in time for the new school year without his commitment and dedication.

The Board of Directors of Saskatoon Student Child Care recognized the need for a second Centre to help young parents finish their high school education and move on to post secondary education or the work world. The initial program, Mount Royal Child Care, operates out of Mount Royal Collegiate. It has provided childcare for infants and toddlers of young parents under the age of 22 since opening its doors in 1988.

Royal West Early Learning Centre serves young parents attending Mount Royal Collegiate, Royal West Campus, post secondary education programs and those entering the work force. Parents can be over the age of 22 and continue to use the centre. The licensed facility provides quality childcare for children between the ages of 18 months and 5 years of age. The Board of Directors of Saskatoon Student Child Care are pleased to provide a centre which will continue to support young families as they complete their high school education and move on in the world.

GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE
We are the first Gay-Straight Alliance school in Saskatoon. History was made on Tuesday, March 18th with the first-ever Gay-Straight Alliance meeting. Nineteen students and six staff met to discuss concerns about homophobic behavior in our school. The purpose of the Gay-Straight Alliance is for everyone to work together to defuse homophobic language and anti-gay behavior. Our goal is for Mount Royal to be a safe place for everyone! We meet twice a month and everyone is welcome.

ACT NOW

Two ACT Now Club (anti-racist and cross-cultural) members, Miranda Gurel and Veronica Sellar, were workshop leaders for youth on March 21st, the International Day for the elimination of Racial Discrimination. The event was organized by the Saskatchewan Intercultural Association and was held at White Buffalo Lodge. It is encouraging to see that Mount Royal students have the courage and the skills to take part in the process of stopping racism.

MDA
Plans for the MDA9 trip to Banff are being finalized. A successful information night was held March 10th, 2003. Fundraising has been great and we are booking activities in Calgary and Banff. We wish to thank the parents and community for their generous support.
Students have been very creative, submitting work to the Creative Adventure, Star Phoenix contest, and to the in-house Literary Contest. We wish them success.
The start of second semester saw the grade nine's working on their science projects which were presented at our Open House in early February. Their hard work and determination was much appreciated as the projects turned out great!

WORLD RELIGIONS 30
At the invitation of Multi-Faith Saskatoon, two World Religions students, Ashley Conn and Ashley Loftus, and teacher, May Cummings, were on a panel called "Encountering Other Faiths". Other participants at this panel discussion on Sunday, February 23rd, 2003 were two students from Aden Bowman Collegiate and their teacher, Pat Barry, and one student from Evan Hardy Collegiate. They spoke to an audience of 125 people from many faiths gathered at the Hindu temple. The purpose of the panel was to share personal insights and reflections after completing the World Religions course. The president, Robert White of Multi-Faith Saskatoon, shared the following comments in a letter to the participants. "The students were articulate, candid, had a good balance of humour and depth which was perfect for the occasion. It obviously reflects on the atmosphere of open inquiry that was created in the classroom. The young people demonstrated the capacity we have to be understanding world citizens."
Thank you to Ashley Conn, Ashley Loftus and to Kellen Seymour (who was in the audience and was asked to impromptu share his insights also).
You represented our school in a dignified manner and through your example demonstrated that "young people can be understanding world citizens".

GRAPHIC ARTS
Grade 12 Graphic Art students recently enjoyed having cartoonist, Corrina Rasmussen-Turner in class. Corrina spent three classes with the students creating their own super heroes.
These finished Airbrushed Superheroes will be displayed at our Arts Fair in May.

SRC
The SRC held a Mini-Folkfest during lunch on Wednesday, March 19th, 2003. We had great food and entertainment, which led to a great event. A special thank you to our entertainers. Mary Liang and the Chinese Heritage Dance group, Shauna Munroe, Traditional dancer, and Tahira (aka Tgerri Bear) from Royal West, the belly and flamence dancer. A BIG Thank You to Ms. Turton and all commercial cooking classes who made sure we had plenty of food to sample. And last but not least, thanks to all our other volunteers who were involved in making Folkfest a special one!
In other news, the SRC will be holding elections in April. All those interested see Mr. Roy or Ms. Janzen for applications, start putting your election campaign together, prepare your speeches and good luck!

DRAMA

This year's drama production is I Am A Star, a comedy in two acts! The play focuses on the life of a spoiled teen soap star who is willing to disguise herself as a nerd in the local high school to win the role of her dreams! True love is discovered and true identities are revealed. Lots of fun!

CRIME STOPPERS
The Student Crime Stoppers program is growing at Mount Royal. Students would like to thank everyone who helped make their silent auction a success. We would like to thank the following business for providing items: Mark's Work Warehouse, Bootlegger, Kernels, Wal-Mart, Dairy Queen, Mark's Mobile Oil Change, Music World, CD Plus, Below the Belt, Safeway, Smitty's, Spotlite Dance Supply, Hot 93, CJWW, Magic 98.3, A & W, Great Canadian Bagel, CTV, Rogers Video, Thomas Cook, Chianti's, Handyman Rental, Pizza Hut, Family Pizza and Saskatoon City Police.

CREATIVE WRITING 30
This year's group of writers are a very talented bunch. You can take a look for yourself if you visit the Mendel Art Gallery's High School Art Show as our creative writers are featured with their collection of "Found Poetry". Another opportunity to showcase the talent this year is our fine Art and Dessert Night on Friday, April 11th. Melisa Drincic, Jessica Fauvelle, Jasmine Giesbrecht and Roni Stellar will be reading from their work. The Literary Contest is being judged and the Royal Prism will highlight Mount Royal's most accomplished Creative Writers. Great work, Mustangs!

ART

The Art Department has been busier than a one-armed paperhanger! We have been very involved with several art shows in the city. We had a fine art show at the University's Snelgrove Gallery. It involved six of the city High Schools. It made a fine impression on the academic audience.
We have been busy working with our partnership with the Mendel Art Gallery's Art for Life program. We have Chris Moffat, a muralist supervising a group of students painting murals for the student lounge in the school. Also, the grade 11 art students painted ceiling tiles for the lounge project.
In addition to the lounge's murals, we are starting a mural project with the Stensrud Care Home. The senior students will undertake this.
The Mendel is continuing the Raw Edge show. Students from each grade level have been given the opportunity to work with a professional sculptor, Monica Napier, and a few U of S graduates. The students are using found objects and addressing how change can occur. A few students are going to make photo transfers of the sculptures. Thanks to the guidance of Ms. Prefontaine, two students, Tammy Poorman and Jesse Sayese will record the whole event. The whole process is on videotape and will be on display at our Artsfair in May.
We have had two professional artists visit our classes to show us two different approaches to painting. We enjoyed Scott Cumberland and Rick Piling's slides and paintings.
We hope to make a few gallery visits and see the School Artshow at the Mendel Gallery where three of our students' work is displayed.
All of the Art teachers are looking forward to hosting our 21st Artsfair on May 29th & 30th, 2003.

THE RED CROSS BLOOD DONOR CLINIC

"WAR IN IRAQ!"
Coalition Forces mounting an unprecedented bombing attack on Baghdad. These and other headlines scream at us from the TV and newspaper. All of us are moved by the graphic pictures of war. But what can the average person do? We, in ISCF, have to believe that together we can make even a small difference in the lives of those who are caught in the crossfire! Our immediate focus is to support World Vision (Christian
Humanitarian Organization) in their efforts to assist those effected by the war. Will you join us this month in supporting our fundraising to this cause? Together we can bring a measure of hope to their lives. Thank you and God bless you!

Al Farrell, Heather Puls, Ray Morris & Students Interschool Christian Fellowship (ISCF)

The SADD club set up a display at the Bootlegger store at Circle & 8th on Friday, February 28th and at the store at Confederation Mall on Friday, March 7th. At Circle and 8th, Saskatoon Mayor Jim Madden was there. The Junior Cheerleaders supported the campaign by performing their cheers and dances. A warm thank you to them and their coach, Ms. Susan Taylor. MADD (Mothers Against Drinking and Driving) and Danae's Song had displays as well.

On Tuesday, March 18th the SADD Club invited a motivational speaker, Shayne Stoll, to give a one-hour presentation to the grade 11 and grade 12's. He is a skilled story teller and a comedian. Through his performance, he delivered the message that friends don't let friends drink and drive.

A MESSAGE FROM THE SASKATOON POLICE SERVICE
It would appear by some of the complaints being received by the Saskatoon Police Service that there is some discrepancy as to who has the right of way. The following are excerpts from the Highway Traffic Act that will hopefully help both Motorists and Pedestrians when using our streets:
The Highway Traffic Act States:
Passing and Overtaking
(1) The driver of a vehicle on a highway shall:
On overtaking a person or vehicle using the highway, pass to the left, unless he is approaching an intersection of highways at which he intends to make a right turn or he is approaching an intersection of highways that he intends to cross without turning and the other person is making or has indicated that he is about to make a left turn, in which case he may pass to the right.

Pedestrians
(1) When the driver of a vehicle on a highway within the boundaries of a municipality approaches an intersection or clearly marked pedestrian crosswalk where a peace officer is not on duty and traffic lights are not in operation and a pedestrian is on the half of the highway on which the vehicle is travelling or is approaching so closely from the other half of the highway that he is in danger.
(2) Where a vehicle is stopped in compliance with subsection (1), no person driving a vehicle, proceeding in the same direction on the highway shall overtake or pass that vehicle.
(3) No pedestrian shall leave a curb or other place of safety and proceed into the path of the vehicle on a highway that is so close that it is impracticable for the driver to yield the right of way.
