Graduation will take place on Wednesday June 23, 2004. Thanks and best wishes to our graduates. You will soon become part of the Mount Royal alumni. Thanks for your many contributions over the past four years and always remember your high school. A committee has been established to set up an Alumni Association. If you are interested in being part of a group that works to spread the good Mount Royal word, please give us a call at the school or visit our web site.
As is always the case at this time of year, we must say farewell to a number of staff members. Mrs. Godin is superannuating. We thank her for 30 years of dedicated service to our school. Mrs. Rioux and Mrs. Janzen will continue their maternity leaves. Mr. Balzer, Mr. Bill Clarke, Mrs. Gregoire, Mr. Dewar and Ms. Grant will be transferring to other system schools. Mrs. Arnot will be assuming a new position as an elementary school counselor with our school system. Each of these people will be missed at Mount Royal. We wish them well in their new assignments.
In the fall we will welcome Mrs. Wilson (Library), Mr. Barry (History), Mr. Krips (Music/English), Mr. Cardwell (Special Programs), Mr. Iverson (Science), Mr. Ducasse (Science), Mrs. Fritzke (L.S.W.S.), Ms. Lulchak (Resource) and Mr. Humbert (Vice-Principal) to our staff. We are very pleased to have them at Mount Royal and look forward to their contributions in the future.
We have had a great year at Mount Royal. We are very proud of our student and staff accomplishments in all areas of the school. Highlights include our annual Volleyball and Basketball tournaments and our Dinner Theatre. Our students have done well in Regional Science fair competitions and we have hosted two very successful parent information evenings at our school. Our partnership with the Saskatoon Rotary Club has grown through the year and we are looking forward to continuing our Mount Royal and Area Community Renewal project next year. This partnership has allowed us to employ a Restorative Justice worker that assists us with conflict resolution and mediation with our students. Next year we will continue this initiative with expansion toward student leadership activities and work readiness/mentorship programs. Our second annual mini traditional Pow Wow was a huge success and we have plans to expand to our extended community next year.
As we look forward, we are excited about a partnership we have with Bedford Road and Habitat for Humanity in offering a "High School Carpentry Apprenticeship Program." This program will allow students to receive five high school credits, bank hours toward journeyperson status, and build a home for a family in our community. Eighteen students from the two schools are looking forward to this on site, hands on learning opportunity. This is a very innovative opportunity for young people and we hope the start of many unique offerings our school can provide for our young learners.
I w I would like to say a special good-bye and thank you to Assistant Principal, Mr. John Dewar. Mr. Dewar has spent eight of the last eleven years working at Mount Royal in some capacity, the last three in his current role where he has become very well known to our students and our community. Mr. Dewar leaves to become the Principal at Evan Hardy Collegiate. We wish him all the best in his new position.
As we look ahead to summer and some rest and relaxation it is difficult not to be excited about the future of our Collegiate. Next year will see Cosmetology offered for the first time and we have our fingers crossed that the facility will be ready in time. Royal West will enter it's third year with increased interest and we know that the kind of learning we can offer adult learners ages 18-22 is second to none in the province. Our creative and innovative staff continues to plan for next year and beyond and we look forward to serving this community for a number of years to come. Again, best wishes to the class of 2004 and to all of you an enjoyable and restful summer.
On behalf of the staff,
Basil Hughton

fine example of his scroll saw work. Social Studies, Welding, Woodwork, English,

Arts to fill the girls' gym. This year we added animation to the arts area.
We were also pleased to have guest artists working with our students. Corinne Rasmussen-Turner is an animator. Scott Cumberland, a painter, worked on site with Celeste Desjarlais and James Jones on a mural for our lounge. Everyone enjoyed the variety and quality work from every area.

On April 27th, 2004 Mount Royal Collegiate was recognized by the Canadian Blood Services for its successful blood donor clinic. The award was presented to Mrs. Repski by Her Honour the Honourable Dr. Lynda Haverstock, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan.
Thanks to all who participated in this worthwhile community event.
The MDA 09 class had the experience of traveling to Alberta on May 13th for
a three day trip. Here are some of their comments!
"I swear Mount Royal Collegiate has got to be the best school in the
whole city! The grade nine MDA Banff trip was absolutely amazing. The bus
trip there, the museums, the hot springs
everything was perfect! This
was an especially good trip to get to know the class. I am so much closer
to those I knew before and to those I didn't. Thank you so much, Mrs. Kwasnik-Senger,
Mr. McNarland, Ms. Helps and Mr. May. You guys made this the best it could
be. I would also like to thank the class - thanks guys, we rock! Hope to see
you all in the near future! "- Sarah Leikam
"The Banff trip was awesome! Waking up to mountains and fresh air in the morning is one of the best feelings. The different activities in Banff and places to see were beautiful. It was really cool to meet people from all around the world at the youth hostel. One of the things that I liked was getting to know the people in my class better. You have friends but it's weird how close you get to people who you usually don't hang out with. Being at the top of the mountain and going on the Gondola ride was amazing! It's totally different than the usual surroundings of the prairies. I would have loved to stay in Banff." - Brittany Boeschen
"While I was on the MDA trip to Banff, I had the best time of my life. On the first day I went to the Hot Springs. On the second day I went hiking, went up the Gondola and went shopping with Sarah and Ashley after we had a fantastic meal at the Old Spaghetti Factory,. On the third day I went to Calgary and spent time at the Olympic Park that was built in 1988. At the Olympic Centre, I got to see mountain bikes and how they use a chair lift to go up the hill with their bikes dangling on the side of the chairlift. I also explored all the other options at the Olympic Park. After that I went to the Calgary Zoo. I learned lots about everybody and strengthened my friendship with all of my friends." - Wade Janzen
"The MDA grade nine Banff trip was so fun! We got to fit in so many activities
in such a short period of time. I also felt it was a great bonding time for
our class and gave us the opportunity to hang out with the people we usually
don't. Seeing the mountains was so beautiful and it makes it a lot more fun
when you are with all your friends. The hostel was also an amazing experience.
We got to meet people from places all over the world like Ireland, Switzerland
and Quebec. I would definitely love to go on this trip again!!"- Teagan
Hiebert
"I loved the trip so much. I am so glad I went into MDA. I think our class became more of a class during the trip. Our class is no longer a class, but we are a team. I loved the ride up the mountain. I have never been on a gondola before. The view on top of the mountain was great. I really wish it was not over yet. It was the BEST TRIP ever!"- Ashley Urban
"There was so much I loved about our trip. The zoo in Calgary was definitely
one of my favorite activities. It was fun and interesting. The Hot Springs
was a really good activity. One where you could relax. The Bow Falls was very
enjoyable as well. It was gorgeous and a good hike for exercise. There isn't
too much I have to complain about on our trip. A suggestion would be maybe
something more hands-on when in museums like the art one.
The trip to Banff was awesome. I'm getting restless in school because we're
so close to the end of the year and this trip was just what I needed for an
extra boost. Being with the class brought everyone closer together and we
were able to have a lot of fun with our friends. There were fun, relaxing
and worthwhile activities that we did that made this trip just perfect. Every
time when we were driving on the bus for hours on end, we had fun watching
movies or playing games. I have no regrets about going to Banff with MDA.
It's good to see Mount Royal doing something like this for its teens."
