MOUNT ROYAL'S SPRING FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS

Friday, April 27th was truly a night to be remembered by students, staff and families of Mount Royal. Hosted by Jennifer Klotz and Jasmine Cross, the evening began with a mouth-watering selection of desserts including those created by our own commercial cooking students and cafeteria staff. As guests satisfied their sweet tooths in the spring "garden" of the library, they were entertained by some of Mount Royal's finest musicians, singers, writers, and artists including: Brittney Balfour, Scott Bevan, Chelsea Boyd, Andrew Burke, Michelle and Ashley Conn, Rychelle Dahlen, Starla Fiddler, Jasmine Giesbrecht, Amanda Gregorash, Amanda Greyeyes, Jamey Hughton, Troy Klassen, Nickolas Koupantsis, Bronwyn Martens, Megan and Quinn Wilchynski. The teachers quartet of Mr. Bond, Mr. Farrell, Mr. Hanson and Mr. Panchuk provided a "retro" walk down memory lane with their renditions. Each performer left unique memories to be savoured long after the evening ended.

Guests were then invited to the lecture theatre to enjoy the drama selection entitled "Competition Piece". Uproarious laughter echoed through the halls as the audience was treated to a superb performance by a talented cast including: Bronwyn Martens, Erika Lanzer, Krysten Bond, Katrina Olson, Stevie Friesen, Nathan Perkins, Kyle Nowosad, Miranda Hagel, Mitchell Fehr, Andrew Burke, Jasmine Giesbrecht, Debbie Gustafson, Michelle Conn, Nick Koupantsis, Lorne Ashton, Jennifer Stewart, Jon Derry, Kerri Brown, Miranda Gurel, Quinn Wilchynski, Matthew Spratt, Veronica Sellar and Troy Klassen. It was a great show!

Thanks to Ms. Tryon for directing and Mrs. McCrae, Ms. Grant and Mrs. Palmer for assisting. Also special thanks to Mr. Jorgenson, Ms. Martin and Mr. Sikorsky for the art display; Ms. Drew, Mrs. Boyko and Mrs. Samborsky and their students for desserts; Mr. Bond, Keith Toews, Evan Sikorsky and Chris Graham, the light, sound, and stage crew; Mr. Wells, set design; Mrs. Kwasnik-Senger and Mrs. Kadyschuk for production; and Amanda Constant, Jeanette Vu, Leanne Maczek, Bunthan Prak, Wendy Loveridge, Jenilee and Jessilee Kohut for serving. MDA 09

On Thursday, May 10th forty-two enthusiastic Grade 9 MDA students and their teachers, Ms. Veal, Mrs. Kwasnik-Senger, Mr. May and Mr. McNarland boarded a bus for the 5th Annual MDA trip to Banff.

Our first stop was the Tyrell Museum where students experienced hands-on fun. They also hiked the Drumheller Badlands and learned the geology/history of the area. After checking in at the Banff Youth Hostel, we enjoyed relaxing at the Sulpher Hot Springs on Thursday evening. At 6:30 A.M., Friday morning, we were hiking in and around Banff. The weather was perfect and the energy high. We experienced the thrill of the gondola lift, enjoyed the elk and mountain sheep, and toured Banff Springs Hotel. In the afternoon, we travelled to Lake Louise, a #1 tourist attraction in the Rockies. On Saturday we toured the Glenbow Museum and the Calgary Zoo. Students have wonderful memories of a perfect trip!

MDA 09 students were also big winners of the Mount Royal Literary Contest. In Junior Poetry, Hayley Platz placed first, Krista Rosluk placed third, Holly Hallikainen and Scott Lewis received honourable mentions.

In Junior Prose, Nathaniel Husulak placed third, Janadine Augustine and David Barsi received Honourable Mentions. Congratulations!

The following are student comments about the education and social value of their trip:

"The MDA Banff trip for grade nine students is very important. So much can be learned on this trip. Places like the Royal Tyrell Museum and the Glenbow Museum are great. What is shown in those museums is the same as what is taught in grade nine, through subjects like social studies and science. For example, in social studies you learn about becoming a knight in the medieval period. The Glenbow Museum has interesting displays and information about that same subject. It is easier to understand things like that if it can be seen first-hand. The hiking trail at the Royal Tyrell Museum lets students see many different types of rock formations. That's the type of thing learned in science class. Those two places aren't the only ones that offer educational opportunities. There are also places like the Calgary Zoo, Lake Louise and Sulphur Mountain. This trip to Banff offers numerous educational opportunities for people of all ages." - Krista Rosluk

"On the bus ride getting closer to home, I began to think about what an awesome experience this was for me on this year's trip to Banff. The main purpose, probably, was the educational aspect. Everywhere we went, I think we learned something new and interesting. Whether at the Tyrell Museum, learning about the different dinosaurs, or hiking along the Bow River learning about the history and seeing its beauty. This trip was not only educational, but also socially great for the whole M.D.A. group. Spending extra time with your friends far away from home gave us a chance to learn more about each other. Sure we all knew each other, but by sitting on the bus together for hours, going various places together, or just staying at the Youth Hostel gave us a chance to bond even more. Altogether, I just think this trip was a memorable experience for all of us students in M.D.A., educationally and socially." Erica Kondra

"This trip teaches many things. You learn to respect others a lot more than you did before. You may learn about other cultures if you talk to the people in the hostel. When you are at the Tyrell Museum you will learn about the dinosaurs, how they lived, what they ate, how many different animals there were, and much more. At the Glenbow Museum you learn about ancient cultures and how they lived. They have a section full of sculptures and you can learn about the significance of them. The social value of this trip is the best thing. You get to know all the people in the MDA program and make more friends. At the end of the trip I was a lot friendlier because I would talk to store owners and even people in the washrooms. You become very polite and very friendly. At the end of the trip you will say hi to anyone you pass and you learn many social skills. This trip will help you a lot in life. It teaches you about history, friendship, respect, and how to be responsible." - Sara Akister

"THE MOUNT ROYAL DAYCARE THANKS SOME GREAT PEOPLE"

The Saskatoon Kinsmen Club has provided the Mount Royal Childcare Centre with a major donation that is greatly appreciated. When our centre opened in 1988 most of our kitchen equipment and appliances were purchased second-hand. Over the last two years this equipment has been breaking down and repair costs have been growing. The Saskatoon Kinsmen Club came to our rescue and donated the following needed items: a new refrigerator, a stove, an upright deepfreeze, two microwave ovens, kitchen pots, knives, and other kitchen equipmentThank you, Saskatoon Kinsmen Club! You're a great community-minded organization that has made a difference!Thank you to the Mount Royal Staff who made a donation from money collected from the "Dress Down Days". This donation helped us purchase a new rocking chair for our infant centre!

- back to the top -

As our school year moves closer to complete and seasons change, we continue to be appreciative of the many contributions that students and staff make to our school. The willingness of our students to get involved in our many activities, and the enthusiasm generated at our Open House further reinforce our view that Mount Royal Collegiate is an outstanding school. We thank all those who are committed to making our school the best it can be.

In reflecting on the past months, we are reminded of the successes of our students. Our Junior Cheerleading team was once again declared as City Champions. As well, our Senior Cheerleading team were silver medallists. The Wrestling team captured the league championship, the Dual Summit Championship and the City Championship. They also captured the silver medal at the Provincial Championships, missing the gold medal by the slimmest of margins. Justin Bighetty, Justin Reis and Kurtis Southern all captured both city and provincial gold. Congratulations are extended to all of our competitors and coaches for a job well done! We are proud of your accomplishments.

We recently had the opportunity of showcasing our school at our Open House in February. The enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by our students and staff were very much appreciated. Those in attendance commented on this enthusiasm, on the well-cared-for facility, and on the wide variety of programs available at our schools. Our thanks are extended to all those who contributed to the overall success of our Open House.

There are also important activities scheduled over the next weeks and months. Our traditional Dessert Night is planned for late April where we will be entertained by music, literary and drama groups. Many of our students and staff have been busily planning this gala evening, and again this affords us an opportunity to showcase the many talents of our students. On the athletic front, badminton and track are well underway and we know our athletes will represent our school well.

We are undergoing a renovation project in our counselling area which will permit us to establish a Career Centre in our school. With the inclusion of career materials and new computers, this area will better meet the needs of our students in the area of career education. We anxiously await the completion of the project and opening after Easter.

Thanks are extended to parent/guardians for attending our recent parent/teacher interviews. It is our hope that you appreciated receiving feedback on the performance of your son/daughter early in the semester. Communication with the home is important for our staff. If you have any further concerns or questions, do not hesitate to contact us. As often said, together we can make a difference.

A.C.T. NOW

On March 21st the following students of the newly formed club, "ACT Now" went to Brightwater Camp, accompanied by Ms. Budd and Madame Cummings: Latoya Meetos, Leticia Fleury, Pam Albert, Miranda Gurel, Veronica Sellar, Crystal Moncrief, Leaetta Bloor, Kellen Seymour and Martina Whitehead.

"ACT Now" is an anti-racist group derived from Regina's similar program "ACT 2000". During the three-day span of March 21st, 22nd and 23rd, "ACT Now" and Grade 6-8 students from Howard Coad, Lester B. Pearson and Caroline Robins Schools learned where racism evolved, where it occurs, and how to take action to stop it. We heard from several guest speakers, including a former MRCI teacher, Mrs. Bellegarde. We were also lucky enough to receive a visit from Mrs. Rene Baxter, the Director of Education. As well, we were visited by two refugees from Zaire. The two girls, Edwina and Giselle, came to Canada through the Open Door Society, and after 6 years in African refugee camps, are now students attending Holy Cross High School.

Now that "ACT Now" is informed, we plan to take action. We are planning to fill a display case with anti-racist posters as well as with our logo orange T-shirt. We also plan to forward other ideas to the staff and to the SRC.

MOUNT ROYAL TEEN AT UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL SESSION IN JANUARY

Many of you may know me from my picture and article in the Star Phoenix in January. Those of you who don't, I am Candis Clarke, the selected youth delegate on behalf of the United Nations special session on children.

I attended this session in January and will be attending more meetings in June and September. Each of these meetings is preparing for the United Nations Summit Meeting in September. These meetings include children from the 191 United Nation countries from around the world. All but one is represented.

At these meetings, we discuss all of the children in the world! Our main goal is children's rights; what should they be? As a Canadian delegate, it is important for me to get your feedback. The youth of the world need to speak out about their problems such as poverty, war, etc.

If you are interested in the Summit, or interested in going to the meeting in June, please feel free to talk to me. Even a small voice can have an echo.

Candis Clark

BAND AND CHORAL

March 22nd - 24th was the culmination of many hours of fundraising and practise for Mount Royal's band and choral singers. After performing a concert at Howard Coad, they travelled by bus to Edmonton to participate in a festival and clinic. Visits to the Imax Science Center, Legislature Building and West Edmonton Mall made the trip a highlight for all. The students represented Mount Royal extremely well. We are proud to have had them represent us!

Thanks to Mrs. Martens, Mrs. Greyeyes, Mrs. Walters and Mrs. Wilchynski for chaperoning. This marks the end of choral for this year. Hope to see everyone back next season!!!

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN HOME ECONOMICS AND COMMERCIAL COOKING?

Commercial Cooking 10

The students in the initial year of the program have accomplished much in the first few weeks of Semester Two. Throughout the six classes, various topics have been covered including working in the food service industry, garnishing techniques, and working in the bakeshop. Various items have been produced in the bakeshop unit including muffins, decorated cakes and cookies.

All students at this level will have the opportunity to become certified in the Foodsafe Program. This is an internationally recognized sanitation course. We congratulate those students who were certified in March: R'Shelle Bowns, Nolan Brass, Dustin Brett, Jeffrey Kovacs, Gillis Norton, Kellie Phipps, Kelly Rendell, Susan Thatcher, Sheldon Willis, Christina Hutcheon, Leah Layton, Shannon Brown, Jessica Konotopski, Justin Bueckert, Travis Johnstone, Jean Lozowchuk and Barbara Powder.

Expect to hear more about this program as the semester progresses.

Miss Langlois' Commercial Cooking students recently put their skills to the test by preparing food for Anti-Racism Day. The CoCo 10 students prepared bannock and scones while the CoCo 30 students prepared humus.

Commercial Cooking 20

The three classes of students have been practising cooking techniques by doing lab work, preparing food for the student and staff cafeteria lines, and catering.

All classes helped prepare the lunches and dinners for the ACT NOW project at Brightwater Camp. We heard back from some of the participants that the tacos, lasagna and chicken cacciatore were well received. Some students have worked on their cake decorating skills and are now taking catering orders for birthday and other special-occasion cakes.

Commercial Cooking 30

The students have been working on several advanced skills and techniques in the area of food production.

Tourism, Hospitality and Entrepreneurship 30

In this new class, students have heard from restaurant entrepreneurs from Lonna's and Quizno's. They've taken the "Saskatchewan Best" hospitality course sponsored by Saskatchewan Tourism and completed a WHMIS course on hazards in the workplace.

Students are currently completing their first work placement. Their second work placement begins May 7th.

Between placements they will be learning about Human Rights and the Labour Standards Act as they apply to the workplace.

MUSTANG WRESTLING FEDERATION

The spring weather brings to a conclusion another wrestling season, the most successful in a decade at Mount Royal.

The team accomplishments are many - 2nd place at High River, 1st place at Balfour, 1st place Bedford Novice, 7-0 record during league duals capturing the league title, Summit Dual Championship winners, 1st place City Championship, and 2nd place at Provincials.

Focus and sacrifice were two key themes that brought the team together and unified them in a belief. This belief, along with the leadership and determination of the grade 12's, were the factors in having an unbelievable season. The team would like to thank the parents for their strong support. The coaches would like to thank the grade 12's for all they have given to the team; Gary Chan, Curtiss Platzke, Josh Benjamin, George Derak, Jason Horner, Chad Lozowchuk, Chris Hanson, Tony Kiryakos, Todd Ross, Justin Reis, Kurtis Southern, Ryan Webb and Eldar Mujakovic. Each and everyone has left a mark which will help to shape the wrestling team over the next years.
