On The Trail - October , 2001 (Back to Publication Main Menu)
Our school year is well underway and we look forward to another excellent year at Mount Royal Collegiate. We extend a welcome to all parents and guardians whose children are new to the school. We encourage each of you to become actively involved in our school program by supporting our many activities and parent evenings. All of us look forward to meeting you at one of our school events.
As we embark on another school year, we look forward to several new initiatives. Mount Royal Collegiate has received significant funding by being named as one of several new secondary community schools in the province. With input from staff, students and community members, we will develop plans that will benefit all of our students in the school. This will enable to better serve the needs of all students, and make our school even stronger than it is already is. As well, recent renovations have allowed us to create a Career Centre in our school. This centre will allow us to better able provide, through computer interaction, opportunities for students to explore career choices. This will greatly enhance career education planning at Mount Royal. Along with our community school designation, our plans include having community members accessing the Career Centre outside of regular school hours. Watch for announcements in the near future.
As well, we are very pleased with other developments around our school this fall.
a) We were honored to present our Academic Excellence Assembly on Wednesday, October 3rd. This provided us with the opportunity to recognize our top academic students from the previous year. As well, we were pleased to have the Governor General Medal presented to Leanne Mazcek, a 2001 graduate, by Mr. T. Pearson, Director of Education. We extend our congratulations to all recipients and their families for their accomplishments. We are proud of you.
b) The delivery of our grade nine program has undergone one major change. In order to better address concerns around mathematics instruction, all students will now have a minimum of 150 hours of math during their grade nine year. This will permit us to better meet the time requirements in the Math curriculum, and will hopefully lead to better performance from our students.
c) We have added a re-entry room to our overall school program. This will provide a means for some students to better adjust to our school environment. This program is in its second year, and has shown, so far, to be very successful.
d) A new attendance reporting system has been introduced. Utilizing computer technology, homes of those students who have uncleared absences are contacted on a daily basis. Feedback from parents has been very positive. The program is presently restricted to grades ten to twelve students, but beginning on Monday, October 15th, we plan on extending this service to parents/guardians of grade nine students. We hope that this service will continue to prove to be beneficial for all.
We encourage parents/guardians to take an active role in your son's/daughter's education. Our home and school partnership is valued by all of us, and we look forward to meeting each of you at various school evens. Please set aside some time on the evening of Thursday, October 11th (6:30 - 9:00) or the afternoon of Friday, October 12th (1:30 - 4:00) to visit us for parent-teacher interviews.

Once again, we've bolted out of the corral and are off and running. Our new fillies and foals of Grade 9 were welcomed to the school the second week in September by being buddied-up with Grade 12's and participated in a BBQ, Pep Rally, Welcome Walk, football game and dance. A huge thank you to everyone who made our Welcome Week a success. The Grade 9's looked adorable in their fashionable togs!
October looks to be just as busy for us all. Members of our SRC visited the National Student Leadership Conference in Halifax the last week of September and are ready to plan and host next year's National Conference here in Saskatoon. Before then, we are raising the roof and school spirit by hosting a Pep Rally for Mustang Volley at the end of the month, as well as a Hallowe'en bash in the gym. Keep your eyes and ears open for more information via posters and notices. We will also be holding interviews for our Grade 9 positions the first week in October. Good luck to all and thanks for all your interest!

ACT Now is an action-oriented club with a program that focuses on anti-racist and cross-cultural education for youth.
We, as the ACT Now Club at Mount Royal Collegiate, are planning a special and exciting activity for the whole student body and staff. This will be held on December 20th, 2001, the International Day of Human Rights. This will apply Human Rights to everyday life in and outside of school. It will involve a designated time during the school day where all students and staff will all join hands throughout the school hallways which will be accompanied with music from several artists who promote Human Rights. We ask for everyone's support and cooperation to make Human Rights a vital, accepted part at Mount Royal Collegiate and community, and in our world now and into the future. Help us and others by "Holding Human Rights in Our Hands" and applying it in our homes, sharing it with others and spreading it globally one by one. Candis Clarke, a Grade 12 student, had plans to attend meetings in New York at the United Nations headquarters September 16th-23rd. The meetings had to be postponed because of the terrorist attack in New York.
In January and June, 2000 Candis attended meetings in New York to prepare for the signing of the document "The Summit on the Rights of a Child". This is an international document outlining Child's Rights. A new date for the signing of this important document hasn't been set.
Candis will also be involved in the follow-up campaign "Global Movement for Children" or "Say Yes". The campaign will be spear-headed by Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa.
As a by-product of her volunteer activities, Candis was asked to read some documents and respond to them for the federal government and save the Children Canada. Candis was a spokesperson for the launch of "A World Fit for Children" campaign in August, 2001.
Congratulations, Candis, for your hard work and speaking out for children.
Congratulations, Crystal!
Tuesday, October 16th is the National Day Against Impaired Driving. To make students aware of this important day, the SADD club has invited a motivational speaker, Mr. Norblet Georget, to give a "Smart Youth Power Assembly" for Grade 9 and 10's in Period 2 that day.
From the SGI report called 2000 Saskatchewan Traffic Accident facts, it says that there has been a decline in alcohol-related crashes, but alcohol is still the #1 contributing factor in fatal crashes. Since 1999, with changes made to Canada's drinking and driving laws, there are harsher penalties but also an emphasis on rehabilitation as well.
"Now, first, second and third-time offenders face court-ordered licence suspensions of one to three years, two to five years, and three or more years, respectively. As a condition of reinstatement of driving privileges, drivers must serve their entire court-ordered suspension period. Because of the changes to the federal legislation, SGI can no longer provide restricted driving privileges.
In addition to serving the entire suspension period, drivers must attend an addiction screening and complete any prescribed treatment before their licence will be reinstated. Minimum fines have also been increased for such violations from $300 to $600, with no maximum fine.
Other Measures Recently Introduced in Saskatchewan
For more information about the safe driving initiatives, contact SGI at 1-800-667-9868.
We began the new school year with a very enthusiastic group of Grade 9 MDA students. They have expressed a desire to go to Banff in May so we are busy fundraising - collecting pop cans, working at parent-teacher interviews, selling chocolate-coated almonds and much more.
We have planned many enriching activities for the fall. On October 10th we will spend the day at Shekinah, north of Waldheim.
Students use physical activities to learn team building skills and bond with the group.
On October 29th a well known Saskatoon author, Shelley Leedahl, will visit us. She will provide an inspirational two-hour writing workshop. We are very excited to work with her.
Our young thespians are going to Persephone Theatre on November 30th to see Ann, a Canadian classic. In addition, Persephone is generously offering us a backstage tour before the play.
To add to the drama experience, we are heading to the University of Saskatchewan Drama Department on December 11th. Mr. Dwayne Brenna, a drama professor and director, will lead a two-hour Shakespearean Drama Workshop. Students are asked to wear comfortable clothing.
We wind up the 2001 year with a Medieval Feast on December 21st. Students come dressed in authentic 12th Century costume and cook appropriate dishes. We eat, dance and be merry!
We have many activities to look forward to and hope for a great semester of learning!
The students in the initial year of the program have accomplished much in the first few weeks of semester one. Various topics have been covered including working in the food service industry, careers, garnishing techniques and standardization. Various items have been produced in the bakeshop unit including muffins, decorated cakes and cookies.
All students at this level will have the opportunity to become certified in the Foodsafe Program. This is an industry-recognized sanitation course. Expect to hear more about this program as the semester progresses.
Students in Mrs. Samborsky's class who fulfilled the requirements for their Foodsafe Certificate are:
Sarah Akister, Grayson Bond, Erica Kondra, Ezra Lalonde, Michael Markwart, Ashley Meakin, Robin Neufeld, Amber-Lee Owens, Joel Rempel, Avery Pendleton, Elizabeth Reaume, Kim Wearing, Amanda Rotzien, Ryan Sutherland, Amanda Woroschuk, Nathaniel Wurst, Brandon Horseman, Chad Ibbotson
The students have been practising cooking techniques as they prepared foods in the appetizer and salad unit - the ginger soy wings, satay beef brochettes and mango chutney chicken salad were highlights!
In the upcoming weeks students will further their knowledge and skills as they begin preparing food for the student and staff cafeteria lines. They also look forward to an upcoming opportunity to learn to decorate character cakes. At the conclusion of this unit the students will be taking catering orders for birthday and other special occasion cakes.
Students in this class have been learning about the food service industry and learning how to make some great appetizers like potato skins, spanikopita and stuffed mushrooms. They also made 12 dozen butter tarts for a catering order.
Due to changes in the curriculum, Grade 9 Home Ec students will have a chance to try their hands at cooking this year. In the past, Grade 9 students took sewing for the entire semester. Mrs. Brusky's class has completed the foods portion of the class while Miss Langlois' students will be cooking in December and January.

Mount Royal Collegiate has recently been informed that the provincial government has recognized our school as one of the new community high schools in the province. We are eagerly anticipating the resources this new designation will provide for our students and community. As the plan for the use of funds earmarked for our school unfolds, we will strive to keep your informed. We are confident that all of our students will benefit from the extra resources our school will receive. We are pleased to join Nutana and Bedford Road as our city's newest community high schools.
During the year, we will have alternate schedules every Thursday. These times will be for staff, department and Leadership Council meetings. All other meetings will be held during non-school hours. For many grade nine parents, this year may be the first contact with a high school since they attended. To familiarize parents with the operation of Mount Royal, we will be holding an ORIENTATION NIGHT on Wednesday, September 12th starting at 7:00 P.M. Parents will have the opportunity to follow their student's timetables to get a sense of a typical day at Mount Royal.
The format for the night is an assembly in the Girls' Gym beginning at 7:00 P.M. After short introductions, we will proceed to your student's Period 1 class.
We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity we are providing. We look forward to meeting you at that time.
We remind parents that student photos will be taken on Wednesday, September 12th. Please have students come prepared with their best smiles for the occasion. There is no charge for the sitting and students will be offered a choice of two poses from which they may select prints.
Please note that if photos are not taken, the student's name will not appear in the yearbook.
Student photo ID cards may also be linked to our student bus passes for this year.
Students are required to make a one-time deposit of $30.00 to Textbook Rentals for the use of textbooks. Students new to the school may pay by cheque, payable to Saskatoon Public School Division. (Note: This cheque should be separate from any cheque for school fees.) If all books are returned, students will be refunded the $30.00 fee upon graduation or leaving the school.
Grade 9 and new students must purchase a lock from the school. Lockers will be assigned by school personnel.
Students who are returning to Mount Royal Collegiate, and who were enrolled until the end of Semester Two, will retain the same lock and locker as last semester.
Students who are either upgrading, or who are former students who were not enrolled last semester, are asked to bring their school locks from home.

AUTOMATED
ATTENDANCE PHONING SYSTEM
This year at Mount Royal Collegiate we will be installing an automated phoning system to enhance communication with parents, students and teachers regarding student attendance. The new system will place calls to all homes of students who have been absent 1 or more class periods during a particular school day. We would encourage parents or guardians to phone our attendance secretary at 683-7805 to clear legitimate student absences and to inform the school of known future appointments.
We feel that with current and accurate attendance information we can all help our students become successful.
