Please join us in taking our HATS OFF and extending ENTHUSIASTIC CHEERS
to Mount Royal student, Gordie Fedoruk, who went to Haaksbergen, Holland
from May 17th to May 20th, 2002 to play soccer in the International
Youth Football Tournament. (Please note that in Europe, the word "football"
refers to "soccer".) The tournament takes place every three
years. Gordie is a member of the Saskatoon Bon Boys Soccer team. This
was the first time in the history of the International Youth Football
Tournament that a Team from Canada participated. The Bon Boys competed
with teams from Poland, Hungary, Denmark, Belgium, Belarus and Germany.
The Bon Boys Team members enjoyed excellent Dutch hospitality. At the
end of the tournament the Bon Boys achieved second place. Congratulations,

VISUAL ARTS NEWS
The Mendel Art Gallery is working closely with Mount Royal Collegiate and
the community in a visionary, completely funded Art for Life Program. For
three years the Mendel Art gallery liaison will make weekly visits to the
school to participate with students. Mount Royal student groups have been
painting and drawing at the Mendel Art Gallery amidst the works of professional
artists. In addition to offering workshops to our fine arts students, the
Mendel Arts for Life Program is also mandated to reach beyond art classes
into other disciplines. Many of you have read the Sheila Robertson of the
Saskatoon Star Phoenix (May 25th, 2002) article in the Weekend Extra section,
which provided a lively description of the Raw Edge project at the Mendel
Art Gallery. Sam Seto and Leila Krasnic are photographed in front of their
huge charcoal mural projects which are exhibited at the Gallery until June
2nd, 2002. It is truly exciting for students and teachers to see the students
working on such large-scale projects. Congratulations to all the teachers,
Mendel Art Gallery staff, Saskatoon benefactors, participants and students
for promoting a strong arts community and nurturing creative energy.
The practical arts department, along with graphic arts and fine arts, once
again displayed magnificent student works at the Mount Royal Arts Fair May
30th - 31st. Mendel Art Gallery associate curator was on site to award first
and second place ribbons in a range of categories, including woodworking,
cake decorating, graphic art and fine art.
Friday, April 26th was truly a night to be remembered by students, staff
and community guests. Hosted by Chad Barker and Victoria Bridgewater, the
evening began with a mouthwatering selection of desserts and fresh fruit.
As guests satisfied their sweet tooth, they were entertained by Royal's
finest musicians, singers, writers and artists, including Bronwyn Martens,
Taylor Leedahl, Zin Thant, Soe Pyisone, Moe Thuya, Susanna and Abe Elkhalifa
and Jessica Fauvelle. The musical talent of the staff also enchoed through
the library. Mr. Strange, Mr. Bond and Mrs. Pittman treated us to superb
performances.
Guests were then invited to enjoy "Suddenly Shakespeare" directed
by Mr. Hanson. The talented cast included Miranda Gurel, Quinn Wilchynski,
Jasmine Giesbrecht, Megan Litterick, Curtis Ptolomy, Keith Toews, Stephanie
English and Jennifer Stewart. Victoria Bridgewater and Chad Barker hosted
the event.
Thank you to Mr. Jorgenson, Ms. Marten, Mr. Sikorsky and Mr. Strange for
the art display; Ms. Drew and Mrs. Boyko for fruit and coffee; Mr. Bond
and Brent Roberts for light and sound; and Mrs. Grant and Ms. Kwasnik-Senger
for events production. Also thank you to the Grade 9 MDA for decorating
and serving. It was a great evening!

ROYAL RAMBLE
This walkathon was a fundraiser for the Fred Fentiman Scholarship Fund and
was held at noon on May 31st. The students and staff were given a big send-off
by a piper and members of the local muzzle-loading club.
I.S.C.F.
The "Quest" series was very effective with 50+ students attending
each Tuesday at noon. Plans are underway to incorporate QUEST along with
other activities during the next school year. Thursday morning fellowship
and share times have been ongoing.
Each year the Grade 9 MDA students fundraise from September
to March with the goal of a trip in May. Our financial goal was reached and
the MDA trip was a go for May 9th -11th.
The bus left Mount Royal Thursday morning with four teachers - Ms. Kwasnik-Senger,
Mrs. Breen, Mr. May and Mr. McNarland and one parent, Mrs. Fentiman. We were
apprehensive about the weather as Calgary had recently received 30cm of snow.
Fortunately, we only experienced sunshine! Our first stop was the Tyrell Museum
in Drumheller, where students hiked the badlands and explored palaeontology.
Upon arriving in Banff, we checked in at the Youth Hostel and headed off for
a soak at the Hot Springs.
The following morning, students were hiking in and around Banff by 7:30 A.M.
we toured the luxurious Banff Springs Hotel and were awed by the Sulpher Mountain
Gondola. Friday afternoon was spent at Lake Louise, followed by an evening
of watersliding and recreation.
Saturday morning began with a 7:00 A.M. breakfast and bus ride to Calgary.
Students visited the world-famous Glenbow Museum and Calgary Zoo.
The bus ride home is long as everyone is tired. The overall response from
student is "awesome trip". The Grade 9 MDA had an excellent time.
EDUCATION/SOCIAL VALUE OF THIS TRIP:
I believe that this trip was very fulfilling, both socially and educationally.
Being with the whole group together for three days was a great experience
and we all got along extremely well. It's so much fun to be with a group of
people you get along with so well and that enjoy being together. I feel that
I am closer to a lot of people after the trip, and this will help me for next
year because now our whole MDA group is so close, even if we weren't all in
the same classes. Educationally I think that the trip was fantastic, because
we had hands-on experiences that were fun, and informative while we were learning
we would be hiking or exploring, so we were able to exercise at the same time.
What we learned about was also interesting, for example the Banff Springs
hotel. Being able to learn about the hotel while seeing it was so much better
than sitting in a classroom and being lectured about it. - Kelly Fairbrother
The Banff trip had important educational values as well as important social values. While visiting the Glenbow Museum, the classes were split up and each went on to a different learning section. The yellow group learned a lot about the Aboriginal past of Alberta. The black group went to the artistic section of the museum and learned bout Pop Art and Culture. Both tours were very informative and contributed to the educational portion of the trip, but this trip had endless social values. Spending three straight days with the sample people can teach you a lot about friendship and interdependence. Not only did everyone learn a lot about each other, they also learned a lot about themselves. This trip gave everyone an opportunity to explore his or her own values and beliefs. - Tanner Lange
On Friday, May 17, 2002 students in the World Religions 30 course went on an all-day fieldtrip to visit various places of worship. The students and their teacher, Mrs. Cummings, travelled by bus with their tour guide, Ms. Rita Gillies from Multi-Faith Saskatoon. The places of worship that were visited were the Sikh Temple, the Chinese Buddhist Temple, the Hindu Temple, the Jewish Synagogue and then the Moslem Mosque. These faith communities warmly welcomed us.
SHAW CABLE VISITS MOUNT ROYAL'S
NEW COURSE - WORLD RELIGIONS 30
There is a new course at Mount Royal Collegiate called World Religions 30.
This course has been offered at high schools in the city this 2001-2002
school year. As part of Shaw Cable's school series, a crew came to the world
religions class on May 8th to film a lesson, interview the teacher, Mrs.
Cummings, and two students, James Loendhorf and Trisha Weathered. This was
broadcast on Shaw Cable News on Thursday, May 9th.
Mrs. Cummings stated that the aim of the course is to provide an academic
forum in which students can learn about the many aspects of world religions,
to understand that religion plays a significant role in history and in current
society and to prepare students to be responsible citizens in a diverse
society. The students interviewed said that they found the course had increased
their understanding of other faiths, which is an essential step towards
world peace, and to appreciate the differences and recognize that human
beings have much in common.

In an attempt to make the transition between Grade 8 and Grade 9 as smooth as possible, the staff has compiled a list of common expectations that all Grade 9 teachers will implement. We are hoping that enforcing consistent expectations will make this transition period easier on the students.
GRADE 9 EXPECTATIONS
1. AN EXCUSED ABSENCE ON THE DAY OF AN EXAM RESULTS IN A 0% UNLESS THE ABSENCE IS CLEARED WITHIN 24 HOURS.
2. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ARRIVE IN CLASS BEFORE THE BELL WITH THE PROPER MATERIALS. IF THE STUDENT IS TARDY, THE ATTENDANCE RECORD WILL BE CREDITED WITH A LATE. FOR ATTENDANCE RECORD PURPOSES, TWO LATES WILL EQUAL ONE ABSENCE.
3. ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE ON THE DUE DATE. IF ASSIGNMENTS ARE LATE, HE/SHE HAS FIVE ACADEMIC DAYS TO HAND IT IN WITH A 10% DEDUCTION FOR EACH DAY. ASSIGNMENTS RECEIVED AFTER 5 DAYS WILL RECEIVE A MINIMAL MARK. EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES WILL BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION.BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS
4. No hats are allowed in the classroom.
5. It is a common expectation that all members of Mount Royal Collegiate show respect to teachers, property and to fellow students. Several examples of this include: no profanity, racial/sexist comments will not be tolerated, writing on desks is not permitted, and garbage is to be put in trash cans.

Principal's Message
As our school year approaches completion, I continue to be delighted with
the contributions that our students and staff make to our school. It is a
commitment and involvement that characterizes our school and makes Mount Royal
an outstanding school.
In looking back over the past months, a number of events illustrate the quality of our student participation. Our Senior and Junior Cheerleading Teams have once again captured their respective city championships. For our Junior Cheerleaders, this represents their eighth consecutive city title, and seventh out of eight years for our Senior squad. As well, our Wresting Team tied for first inleague competition, won the Dual Summit City Championship and won the City Championship. Evan Wilcox, Troy Lange, Justin Lavertu, Justin Bighetty, Bryce Vetter and Chris Kulbida captured city gold. We congratulate all those who were part of these winning teams. You have represented our school well. Thanks are extended to coaches and supervisors for your efforts with our teams.
We had the opportunity of showcasing our school at our Open House. The support and enthusiasm displayed by staff and hundreds of student volunteers was exceptional. We are proud of our school and our programs, and I am certain that the outstanding quality of our school was recognized by those Grade Eight students and parents who attended.
In the coming months, we look forward to our annual Dessert Night where our music, literacy and drama students have an opportunity to showcase their outstanding talent. As well, we will embark on our Badminton schedule, begin Track and Field, plan for our annual Voyageur trip and organize the MDA9 trip to Alberta.
We are proud of several new developments at Mount Royal. We have established partnerships with the Mendel Art Gallery, Persephone Theatre and the Frontier College Tutoring Program. Each of these will add much to our school. As well, we will be implementing the PLATO Program soon, which will provide computerized assistance to students in the core academic areas. We continue to seek ways in which we can develop programs that will serve our students.
MUSTANG WRESTLING FEDERATION sent five wrestlers to compete in the Saskatchewan
Winter Games over the break. All five captured Gold medals to help lead the
Zone 5 Wrestling Team to a first-place finish. The Mount Royal members of
the team were Troy Lange, Bryce Vetter, Jordan Marcotte, Devin Packard and
Chris Kulbida.
The Mustang Wrestling Team continued their winning tradition in 2002. This
year's team picked up exactly where last year's team left off. The season
began in December with the pre-season tournament. It was evident at this stage
that the team had the potential to be every bit as good as last year's dominating
squad. The dual season began in December and ended in March. The Mustangs
compiled an 8-1 record; the only loss coming at the hands of Bedford Road.
The final score in that dual was a close 37-32. The tournament schedule saw
the team winning the Regina Balfour Tournament for the second year in a row
as well as capturing the Summit Team Championship in convincing fashion for
the second straight year as well.
This year's team, much like teams from the past, based its success on getting
together with a single focus in mind. The motto, year of sacrifice, was incorporated
as a focus for the team. With that in mind, members of the squad knew it was
their quest to Finish what last year's team Started. The quest started by
capturing a second straight city championship, beating the 2nd place team
from Bedford by 26 points. This victory set the stage for one of the proudest
moments in wrestling history as 18 wrestlers traveled to Prince Albert to
participate in the Provincial Championships. On paper, Regina O'Neil and Bedford
Road provided the closest threat. On the mat, however, the Mustang wrestlers
proved to others what they have known for a long time - that team chemistry
is the "glue" that holds a championship team together. A team that
doesn't have that feeling of togetherness isn't a team and isn't successful.
The final standings at Provincials saw Mount Royal finishing in first place
with 78 points eclipsing second place Bedford by 26 points.
This year's wrestling team was the first to win a provincial championship
and rightfully take its place as one of the best wrestling teams Mount Royal
has ever had. The end to such a storybook season brings feelings of joy but
also feelings of sadness. For 6 Mount Royal wrestlers, it was their last year.
Jon Grainger, Brad Lavertu, Jarret Shendaruk, Kiel Ruehlen, Kevin Bowkowy
and Olay Phothimath leave the program by hoisting a Provincial banner to the
roof the girl's gym. Their presence in the wrestling room will be dearly missed.
This feeling of sadness though is tempered by the fact that the desire, work
ethic and leadership demonstrated by the six will be passed down to the next
generation of wrestlers, much like it was passed down to them. The coaches
and wrestlers salute them for all they have done!
PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
100 kg Grade 11 Chris Kulbida
This year also witnessed a resurgence in girl's wrestling. Jenn Stewart and Holly Lawrence formed a small, committed girl's team. Holly went on to win Bronze at Cities along with a Bronze at Provincials. The foundation of a strong women's program rests in their dedicated hands.
Congratulations to the JUNIOR CHEERLEADERS for becoming the City Champions of the year 2002! The Mount Royal Junior Cheerleaders have been the reigning City Champions since 1997. The team members are: Danielle Pingert, Alisha Tweidt, Haley Platz, Charissa Graham, Mary Som, Ashley Ogren, Laura Wisser, Lexa Mahaffey, Megan Ross, Aurora Epp, Kaylee Hiebert, Katy Fletcher, Ashley Katarynych, Sarah Mitchelmore and Melissa Mick. A great BIG CONGRATULATIONS goes out to the SENIOR CHEERLEADERS who captured the City Championship on March 12th, 2002. The team did a great job of cheering on the Mustangs all year. GREAT JOB TEAM! This year's team members include: Marissa Babalola, Michelle Fisher, Debbie Gustafson, Jon Derry, Tasha Vargo, Stephanie Miller, Kirsten Wignes, Lynelle Reid, Crystal Carlson, Amanda Price, Sarah Rychly, Charlene MacKenzie, Glenda Meldrum, Chelsey Olson, Chelsea Acott, Mandy Child, Crystal Esakin, Crystal Neu, Candice Piecowye and Shantel Millions.

The Home Economics/Commercial Cooking Department is proud to announce the most recent recipients: Brittany Black, Shane Chicoine, Shane Doell, Kyle Evjen, Justin Fergusson, Nathaniel Hosaluk, Hayley Platz, Ryan Rooke, Brittney Balfour, Bethany Fosseneuve, Cam Huckabay, Devan Oneill, Jordan Stevenson, Pamela Toews, Brett Tourand, Melissa Braun, Holy Hallikainen, Melissa Dixon, Bekki Fitzsimonds, Tabitha Isaac, Vincent Mack, Tirzah Olynyk, Tyler Renauld, Susana Rizzo, Evan Sikorsky, Malerie Skoberne, Cindy Truong, Terri Wiebe, Kim Levandoski, Jasmine Oraas and Amber Block.
This group held a one-day workshop on February 13th, 2002 at Mount Royal
Collegiate. Twenty students signed up to attend. There were workshops on what
racism and discrimination is, ways to deal with racist comments, ways this
club school can promote racial harmony at our school and an appreciation of
our diverse ethnic backgrounds and faiths. There were also two guest speakers
who spoke about their personal experiences in dealing with stereotypes and
intolerance from others.
The A.C.T. Now Club also collaborated with the Student Council in having students
paint their hands and put their handprint on a big banner that was going to
be set up at the Multicultural Day on March 20th.
Did you know that the 2001 Hilltops Football Team - the Canadian Junior Champions
- had four 1997 grads on the team? They are:

.... is a new venture for the I.S.C.F. Club. It will be an opportunity for Mount Royal students to explore issues such as the meaning of life, the effectiveness of prayer, the nature of Jesus Christ, and the relevance of the Bible. Running for six consecutive Tuesdays at noon, the club started meeting on March 19th. The series includes a free meal, a short presentation and small group discussion. "Quest" is an initiative of Saskatoon Youth for Christ. All "Royal" students are welcome and any inquiries should be directed to Al Farrell in Student Services at 683-7812.

I joined the Saskatoon Police Service in 1993 and have been assigned to the Community Services Unit since September, 2001. I spent the first five years of my career in Patrol, followed by three years in the Mountain Bike Unit.My main duties as a School Resource Officer include:w Provide a "visible presence" in the schools and the community. Maintain open lines of communication with staff, students, parents, and the community.w Provide lectures relating to police-related topics. Make resource materials available as required. Provide an opportunity for counseling and intervention.w Interact with students in a proactive manner; provide information to students considering policing as a career.w Work with school staff, local businesses and residents to intervene if students are involved in community issues. Liaise with district patrol officers to problem-solve on matters of mutual concern.I encourage students, staff and parents to contact me if they require additional information.
