Thank you to all who have been so welcoming as I return to Mount Royal. I was fortunate to teach here in my first position with the school division and now I return as principal. Students, staff and community have made this truly feel like returning home. Thanks so much.
Our school year is well underway and we are excited about the excellent opportunities available to our students. We extend a warm welcome to those of you that are new to our community and encourage you to get involved as we work together to provide the best possible educational experience for your young person. We all look forward to meeting you at one of our school events.
We are now in our second year as a designated community school and have many exciting initiatives planned or already underway to meet the diverse needs of our student population. Our Royal West Campus was officially opened on October 2 with dignitaries representing the Provincial Government and the School Division present to help celebrate with us. Thanks to the staff and students at Royal West for organizing this excellent kick-off to what we hope will become a rich tradition. This program provides a unique learning opportunity for students who have finished four years of high school and are trying to obtain graduation status or additional grade 12 credits. Royal West offers the flexibility and support needed to meet the educational needs of these young adults. We look forward to continued expansion of this program.
October 4 marked Mount Royal's first annual mini traditional Powwow. The event, organized by Nina Henry our Community School Coordinator, showcased the talents of a number of our students as well as students from elementary schools in our area. We look forward to making this a regular part of our school calendar. Thanks to all who helped out in any way with this event.
In late August we experienced some flooding in the school during and after a lengthy rain. Work to repair damaged ceiling tiles, flooring and other water damage is underway. Disruptions to the regular flow should be minimal. We ask your patience as we work through these minor interruptions.
Extra-curricular programs are in full swing. Athletic teams are well into their seasons and coaches and players should be congratulated on the excellent way they represent our school. Our band and choral students toured elementary schools on October 8th and invite you to attend the first concert of the year on October 18th in the lecture theatre. Drama students are busy preparing their fall production. "Sparks in the Park" which will take the stage December 6th. Hope to see you there.
I encourage parents/guardians to continue to take an active
role in your sons'/daughters' education. We value the home and school partnership
and I look forward to meeting each of you at various school events. Thanks
in advance for your interest and support of Mount Royal, our students, and
our staff.
On behalf of the staff,
Basil Hughton, Principal
Parent Teacher Interviews were held on Wednesday, October 9th and Thursday, October 10th, 2002. Report cards will be issued to students on Friday, November 15th, 2002.
As usual, the first week of school was very busy with new student registrations. More recently, there have been a number of timetable adjustments as students settle into the semester. M.R.C.I. is offering an expansion of "re-entry" options for new students. As well, the new adult learning campus, Royal West, is up and running smoothly with over 100 students. registrations are being processed now for Semester 2. Grade 12's planning to attend the University of Saskatchewan or Kelsey in the future are encouraged to sign up for Experience Us or Spend-A-Day.
VOLLEYBALL
The Senior Boys' Volleyball season kicked off on September 20th as the Mustangs
traveled to Walter Murray to take on the defending city champions. The Mustangs
were successful and started the season with a bang! This year's term is made
up of some key-returning vets and an energetic group of junior players from
last year. The Mustangs will travel to Prince Albert on October 18th to compete
in the Carlton Crusaders Tournament and are home on October 24th - 26th at
Mustang Volley. We look forward to seeing the stands full at the 17th Annual
Mustang Volley.
Mount Royal's Premier Interprovincial Volleyball Tournament
will run October 24th, 25th and 26th, 2002. The three days of competition

12 girls' teams. The tournament will feature many athletes who have served
as members of our National Team development programs. Action will be fast
and furious. Week-end passes are $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for students.
Session prices are also available.

MUSICIANS OF THE MONTH
Each month students in our music classes (choral, band, guitar) will have
the opportunity to be honored as one of the "Musicians of the Month".
Students who show improvement, skill, cooperation, a positive attitude,
good attendance, or a helpful nature will be eligible. This month's winners
are: Kim Dahl (Choral 30), Rychelle Dahlen (Band 20), Jordan Thunderchild
(Guitar 9), Nick Moisuk (Guitar 10). Great attitude and effort, musicians!
MDA 09
We are small in numbers, but big in enthusiasm! The Grade 9 MDA students have
been extremely busy with fundraising, school work and extra- curricular activities.
Students are very eager to go on the annual spring trip to Banff. Fundraiser
activities included selling chocolate almonds and cookbooks. In addition,
students have worked Grade 9 Orientation Night and have signed up to work
at Parent Teacher Interviews. They are planning to have a bake sale during
interviews.
Academically, students are in the Social Studies/English integration with
Mr. Ferguson and Ms. Kwasnik-Senger. Visitors to the program include Mrs.
Regnier who will present a session on study skills and Shelley Leedahl, a
high recognized author. She will read, as well as provide a writing workshop
for the MDA groups.
We are also travelling. On October 9th we will spend the day at Shekinah,
practicing group strategies. On October 15th we will spend half a day at the
University of Saskatchewan. We will visit the Museum of Antiquities and the
Diefenbaker Centre. Students will also have a chance to do some descriptive
writing along the banks of the South Saskatchewan River.
Thank you to parents and community members who support our endeavours.
Well, the SRC has been busy! Welcome Week ran September 3rd-6th
with activities including a Grade 9 and 12 Buddy-Up, a BBQ, Pep Rally and
football game and the week ended with a Hawaiian dance. A rousing success!
The SRC also attended the Canadian Student Leadership Conference that ran
October 1st-4th. It was an opportunity to meet with and learn from other student
representative councils across the country! An amazing experience, to say
the least.
And last, but not least, two Grade 9 students were selected to join the SRC
as student representatives - congratulations to Mitch Salahub and Jennielle
Henderson!
FOLLOWING THE 'STANGS!
Adam Tourand was awarded the Prince of Wales Scholarship of $500.00, which
is awarded based on leadership in the school and in the community, responsibilities
outside of school, academic performance, and financial support. Congratulations,
Adam!
MINI-TRADITIONAL POWWOW
On Friday, October 4, 2002, Mount Royal Collegiate held its 1st Annual Mini
Traditional Powwow. We would like to thank everyone who came and took part
and give special thanks to the Elders in attendance: Walter Linklater, Maria
Linklater, Simon Kaytwayhat, Fred Spyglass and Evelyn Spyglass. We would
also like to thank the Office of the Treaty Commissioner, Saskatoon Tribal
Council and Wanuskewin Heritage Park for their help as partners in this
event. Finally, thanks goes out to Don Speidel, MC, and all the drummers,
singers and dancers who made this a very special occasion.
ROYAL REWARDS PROGRAM
Beginning in October, 2002, Mount Royal began implementing the Royal Rewards
Program. This is an incentive program in which students receive tickets
from staff for a variety of reasons including improved or perfect attendance,
working hard in class, or going "above and beyond" in any fashion
- academics, extra-curricular, care and concern for others' person and property.
When students receive a ticket, they place it in a draw drum. At this time,
draws are made for two monthly prizes (CD Walkmans in October) and one semester
prize (Play Station 2 with choice of game and video in semester 1).
We may also be offering weekly prizes if we can get donations. If you work
at a business that would like to make a donation towards weekly prizes,
please contact Nina at 683-7822.

(Anti-Racist and Cross-Cultural Club) is holding its 2nd Annual
Holding Human Rights in Our Hands on December 10th, 2002, which is the International
Human Rights Day. All students and teachers will make a chain around the school
holding hands. This symbolizes the fact that each one of us is responsible
for respecting Human Rights and that, as a human race, we are all connected
with each other.
United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December
10th, 1948. This declaration is based on the fundamental principle that human
rights are inherent in every person. The commitment to the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights involves everyone because personal involvement will help build
an environment where equality and dignity are respected. It is up to each
and every one of us. Let's begin by joining hands and Hold Human Rights in
Our Hands.

On behalf of the staff, we would like to welcome back all of our Grade 10, 11, and 12 students and extend a special Royal welcome to our Grade nines. We are confident that all of you will experience a wonderful school year pursuing your academic goals and working toward personal "best" in athletics, the fine arts, and various other social endeavours. We also want to welcome all parents and guardians to the Mount Royal family. Together we can make a difference for your young person.
We are excited about the new school year, our second as a designated community
high school, where we will continue the strong tradition of Mount Royal Collegiate.
Our student representative council has planned a wonderful slate of activities
for Welcome week, September 9-13. These opportunities are intended to help
our new students feel comfortable at Mount Royal, to get to know their teachers
and to share some special moments with all of the new friends they will make.
Please take part in these events and get involved in school activities. We
have many great activities to choose from.
It is our hope that the summer has been a good one for you and that your students
will return to school rested and focused. Please stay in touch and feel welcome
at the school anytime. We sincerely value your ideas, questions and support
of our school and programs.
We look forward to our association in the coming year.

Our school has changed the format for registration so that students begin classes as early as possible. All students will register at 8:45 A.M. on Wednesday, August 28.
Students are asked to attend their Period 2 class (homeroom class) at 8:45 A.M. on that date. Lists will be posted in the main hallway indicating homerooms. This registration period will extend from 8:45 to 9:55 A.M. Following the registration period, students will move to their Period 1 class. After the morning break, Period 3 will occur. The after will consist of Period 4 and 5.
A regular schedule will occur on Thursday. Student fees can be paid to the homeroom teacher during the registration period.
Last June, the staff decided to shorten the lunch hour by 15 minutes. It was felt that it was no longer necessary to have a 70 minute lunch hour. Below is the new schedule.

GIRLS' AND BOYS' SOCCER
There will be a Girl's Soccer meeting in Room 216 on Wednesday, August 28th
at 1:05 P.M., while the Boy's Soccer meeting will be held in Room 232. Anyone
wanting to try out MUST attend this meeting to sign up and get permission
forms for participation in tryout practices. These tryouts will begin on
Thursday, August 29th from 3:30 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. All students from Grade
9-12 are invited to come out. (If you do not get a permission form, you
will not be allowed to try out.)
For many grade nine parents, this year may be the first contact
with a high school since they attended. To familiarize parents with the operation
of Mount Royal, we will be holding an ORIENTATION NIGHT on Wednesday, September
11 starting at 7:00 P.M. Parents will have the opportunity to follow their
student's timetables to get a sense of a typical day at Mount Royal.
The format for the night is an assembly in the Girls' Gym beginning at 7:00
P.M. After short introductions, we will proceed to your student's Period 1
class.
We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity we are providing. We look forward to meeting you at that time.
Students are required to make a one-time deposit of $30.00 to Textbook Rentals for the use of textbooks. Students new to the school may pay by cheque, payable to Saskatoon Public School Division. (Note: This cheque should be separate from any cheque for school fees.) If all books are returned, students will be refunded the $30.00 fee upon graduation or leaving the school.
After a most successful pilot project, we are ready to launch a full season of the Persephone Club. The club is a joint venture between Mount Royal Collegiate and the Persephone Theatre and targeted towards students who have an interest in all aspects of theatre. Students who join this exciting new club purchase a subsidized season's ticket for ten dollars. Over the course of the school year, they attend six matinees. But there is more!
Prior to each matinee, they meet over a noon hour with Ms. Browne
who discusses the production they are about to see so that they view the play
as knowledgeable, informed, and critical theatregoers. After each production,
the students have a question and answer session with the actors. This aspect
of the club has been the most exciting for both the students and actors. The
manager of the Persephone has passed on the message from the actors that they
were impressed by the intelligence and sophistication of the questions from
the Mount Royal Persephone Club members.
Many students have expressed interest in joining up next year.
If you are interested in joining us and you missed the announcements, or feel just plain out of the loop, here's what you do: contact Ms. Browne, ask her any questions you may have about the club, and pick up an information package from her. We start up in September and our first matinee is early in October - so don't miss out!
Grade 9 and new students must purchase a lock from the school. Lockers will be assigned by school personnel. Students who are returning to Mount Royal and who were enrolled until the end of June will retain the same lock and locker as last year.
We remind parents that student photos will be taken on Monday, September 9th. Please have students come prepared with their best smiles for the occasion. There is no charge for the sitting and students will be offered a choice of two poses from which they may select prints.
Please note that if photos are not taken, the student's name will not appear in the yearbook.
Student photo ID cards will be linked to our student bus passes for this year.
The Saskatoon Public School Division is again providing students
with a bus pass for a reduced rate if the family lives within the subsidized
area.
If you live more than 3 km. from your nearest high school, you will be eligible
for this subsidy.
All students must apply each year by filling in a registration form. Forms are available in the main office.
Please contact us if you have any questions.
The Royal West Campus, located in the old Estey School, will open its doors to 5th year students at the start of the school year. The Campus provides many core grade 12 courses while its close proximity to Mount Royal (three blocks away) allows students the opportunity to access the wide variety of electives a comprehensive collegiate offers. In an attempt to better meet the needs of young adults, some unique features included at the Campus are: extension courses, on-line classes, and an early leaning centre for children 30 months to 5 years of age.
There has been tremendous interest in this program throughout our learning community and we are anticipating a student population at the Campus of approximately 120 students. Renovations have occurred at the Campus throughout the summer in preparation for school start-up. If you would like more information on any aspect of the Royal West Program or are interested in a tour of the facility, please do not hesitate to contact us @ 683-7800.
