Our school year began under very different circumstances with the disruption to our extra-curricular program and noon-hour supervision. We want to sincerely thank parents/guardians for your patience during this difficult time, and we are pleased with the resumption of our regular out-of-school activities. Our thanks are also extended to those parents and community members who volunteered their time so that we were able to re-open our school at noon. We are hopeful that we have no further disruptions to our school program for the remainder of the school year.
It is at this time that we extend a welcome to all parents and guardians whose children are new to our school. We encourage you to become actively involved in our school program by supporting our many activities and parent nights. We look forward to meeting you at one of our school events.
Our Facility has undergone some changes over the summer months. The main computer lab was re-equipped with new computers, the drafting lab saw all of its computers replaced and additions of computers, cameras and a laser colour printer in the graphic arts area have greatly helped in enhancing instruction in our school.
We are also pleased with other developments/changes that have occurred around the school for the upcoming year.
We encourage all our parents/guardians to continue to take an active role in your sons'/daughters' education. We value the home and school partnership and we look forward to seeing you at upcoming events. Please set aside some time on the evening of Thursday, October 12 or the afternoon of Friday, October 13 to visit us for parent-teacher interviews.
We cannot end our comments without acknowledging the pending retirement of our head secretary, Beth English. She is retiring at the end of October after twenty-six years of service to Mount Royal Collegiate. She has provided outstanding leadership in our school and we will miss her when she leaves. The contributions she has made over the years will stand the test of time. Our hope is that her retirement will be filled with happiness and good health.

New
Policy on "School Opening Exercises:
Connections to Curricula and Celebrations: (Approved by
Board)
At its June 20, 2000 meeting, the Board of Education approved a new policy providing directions to staff regarding school-opening exercises, connections to curriculum and celebrations. Within this policy, the Board provides for voluntary student participation in spiritual events conducted before and after school. Such events can be organized by parents, students, and community members with the approval of the school principal. All such activities must be supportive of the goals and values of the school division.
If you are interested in organizing and leading spiritual activities before or after school, please call your school principal. The principal will welcome your inquiry and provide you with the necessary information.
Have a great school year
MDA
-- We are excited to welcome 50
enthusiastic grade 9 students into our MDA Program. In the integrated
English-Social Studies with Mr.
May and Ms.
Kwasnik-Senger, students are
working hard on their "Changes" unit.
We have many terrific activities to look forward to in October. On October 3, we will travel to the Diefenbaker Building at the University of Sask. to view the Millennium Display. Students will leave the building at 9 a.m. and return by lunch.
On October 11, we take learning outside the classroom. We plan to spend the day at Shekinah, doing a variety of physical activities.
Our future thespians are off to Persephone Theatre on October 27 to view the prairie classic Who Has seen The Wind. This enhances our unit on Prairie Writers.
A well-known prairie author, Shelley Leedahl, will work with our students on October 25. She will read from her works. In addition, she will provide a two-hour writing workshop to inspire young writers.
MDA students have expressed interest in a spring trip to Banff. We have started fundraising already. Students are gathering cans around the school, working Parent-teacher interviews on October 12-13, and selling chocolate almonds. We welcome all ideas for fundraising. We look forward to an exciting and busy year in the MDA Program.
Foodsafe
Course -- On September 18/19
a number of MRCI students attended a Foodsafe course at Royal
University Hospital, along with students from four other highschools.
Congratulations to the following students who passed the course and
received their certificates: Terra Ewing, Kevin McFadzen, Nadine
Pakulak, Christa Kuzub, Amy Harrison, Steven Hubick, Quinton Moore,
Amanda Sebelius, Sarah Grant.
Auto
Lab -- We are in desperate
need of small engines for our grade 10 program. (i.e. lawn-mowers,
chain saws, snowblowers, weed wackers, roto-tillers, etc.) If you
have any engines that could be donated to the school, please contact
Mr. Hleck at 683-7800, ext.130 Auto Lab.
Also, if you have any old cars or engines that our grade 11 & 12 could use, please contact the Auto lab.
Commercial Cooking 10 -- The students in the initial year of the program have accomplished much in the first few weeks of semester one. Throughout the six classes various topics have been covered including working in the food service industry, garnishing techniques and menu trends. Various items have been produced in the bakeshop including muffins, decorated cakes and cookies. Ms. Drew and Mrs. Samborsky have started Foodsafe certification with their classes.
Commercial Cooking 20 -- The students have been practising cooking techniques as they prepared foods in the appetizer unit - the parmesan chicken and beef satay brochettes were highlights. They will spend the next six weeks in one of three areas preparing food for cafeteria students and staff lines; continuing the lab work in salad, soup, sandwich and dessert production; and catering where they will decorate character cakes and make other bakery items for sale.
Commercial Cooking 30 -- The students have been working on several advanced skills and techniques in the area of food production.
Home
Ec 9 -- The students have
been working on mastering basic sewing skills. We will be beginning
oour projects shortly including lunch bags and pillows.

Mount
Royal Childcare Thanks You, The
Community
- Building A
Future
The Mount Royal Child care centre is operated by Saskatoon Child Care Services, a non-profit community organization. Our centre was established in 1988 to help teen parents in their efforts to earn a hiogh school education. The daycare, located in Mount Royal Collegiate, was the first child care centre in the province to open in a high school. We have grown from a 10-space infant centre to a 22-space infant and toddler program.
We have a new Play Area!!!
Hard work, generosity, and community spirit helped create a new outdoor play area for the Mount Royal Daycare this summer when the interior courtyard was transformed into a child's outdoor dream playground. Old sod was dug up and hauled away. Land was rototilled and leveled. Nine yards of sand were wheelbarrowed in and dumped into a newly constructed 8' x 10' cedar sandbox and an 8' x8' sandpit. Forty feet of unruly shrubbery was dug out and replaced with a line of evergreen cedars; 1700 square feet of sod was put down. A 30 foot double row of sidewalk blocks was laid as a flat space for toddlers to ride and push their toys on. The weathered deck and benches were sanded and stained. A mini hill, built for children to run up and down on, and a new white vinyl galvanized fence, now provide a combination of adventure and safety. A new underground sprinkler system will help keep our play space lush and green.
The Mount Royal Child Care Centre would like to thank the following for their generous support:
"Thank You! You're Great Folks!!"
Recognizing Long term Service
At our June barbecue, staff members Kathie Sider and Lynn Olson were recognized for their ten years of service. They join the ranks of Jane Wallace-Brown and Ellen Saccucci, who have with our centre for thirteen years.
Members of the Board were also recognized for long service. Anne Meier and Sharon Van Cleave have been associated with our Daycare for fifteen years. Ann Macknak, John Boersma and Seth Adams were recognized for their ten years of service.
