Badminton

|
The primary objective of the junior badminton
team is to introduce competitive badminton to as many students as possible
given the constraints of available courts and gym times. Students trying
out for the team do not have to have any special skills or requirements.
It would be advantageous however, if they have already played the sport
in elementary school or in their physical education class. All students
in grades 9 and 10 may try out for the team regardless of previous skills.
If large numbers of students try out, cuts are sometimes made. Practices
are usually 1 1/2 hours long and are held 4 to 5 times per week. Times
are dependant upon gym availability. Games are usually twice a week,
with the season lasting 6 to 7 weeks. The playoff is a one evening tournament.
Racquets and goggles are provided by the school but some students do
bring their own to ensure their equipment is of the desired quality
and fit. Students who make the team are expected to exhibit good sportsmanship
and courtesy at all practices and games. Failure to do so can mean removal
of playing privileges.

9 and 10. The team is made up of between 10 to 13 players. It is the
philosophy of the boys' basketball program that grade nine players play
Frosh and grade tens play junior. Basic skills in basketball are required
as this is a competitive sport. Tryouts begin in November and the season
lasts from November to February. Practices are held everyday during
the season and perfect attendance is required. Team members can look
forward to a city wide tournament in February.

Junior Girls

|
The primary focus of junior girls basketball is to develop basic skills
required for the game. The concept of team play is also vitally important.
Girls who make the squad should be prepared to sacrifice time and effort
in order to reap benefits of playing Mustang Basketball. The season
begins in early November and lasts until the year-end tournament which
occurs in mid-February. There are 15 games in the season. Practices
are held every day during the school week when there are no games. The
practices are most often after school with the odd one before school.
Shooting and bball-handling skills can be worked on before tryouts in
November. Attendance is near mandatory.

Cheerleading
- Senior Football

|
The football cheerleaders are instrumental in promoting school spirit
when the school year begins. The team works hard preparing for the first
pep rally of the year. The freshie walk to the first football game of
the year is filled with excitment as we show off our Mustang spirit.
Cheering throughout the season is lots of fun and we occassionally get
a road trip to North Battleford. The season last from September through
mid November and involves approximatley six football games plus playoffs.
Tryouts and practices are held in the wrestling room. Tryouts are usually
held during the first week of June. Practices are held at noon three
times a week and Thursday from 1:30 - 3:15 p.m. Team members must be
committed prepared to work hard, able to work as a team, amd most importantly
- to have a great smile and lots of school spirit. Special equipment
requirements include white aerobic runners and bodysuit or danskins.

Cheerleading
-Junior Football

|
Junior Cheerleading at Mount Royal is a wonderful opportunity to show
your school spirit, meet new people and have fun. The football season
starts in September and runs until mid-November. Junior Cheerleading
tryouts are held during the second week of school and are open to all
grade 9 and 10 students. The team practices cheers and chants after
school so they are ready to cheer on the Mustangs at all of the Junior
Football games. The cheerleading team focuses on learning new skills,
cheering on the football team and having fun. The football season is
short but it is full of exciting events, including the Charity Bowl
at Gordie Howe Bowl and cheering with the senior cheerleaders at a senior
football game. Before you know it, the snow is falling and the season
is coming to an end, but don't despair. We are soon looking forward
to another opportunity to cheer because basketball season is just around
the corner.

Mustang Volley

|
In 1986 Mount Royal amalgamated our annual senior girls' and boys'
tournaments. M.R.I.T., our girls' tournament, already had a rich 14
year history while Mustang Volley, our boys' tournament, was inaugurated
in 1985. The annual combined tournament, MUSTANG VOLLEY, will usually
take place at Mount Royal on the third weekend in October. Teams will
be guaranteed 7 two-game matches, plus the top four teams in championship
and the top two in consolation play will be guaranteed two additional
best of three matches. (There will be no bronze [3rd place match] for
the consolation side.)
In keeping with M.R.I.T. tradition and the goals of Mustang Volley,
the combined tournament has been designed with the intent to develop
a high level of play. The organizing committee will consider teams based
on the following priorities:
- the top four senior girls' teams and the top three boys' teams in
Saskatoon plus Mount Royal
- out-of-province teams
- Saskatchewan 5A, 4A, 3A 2A and 1A medallists
- other Saskatchewan teams
Applications are accepted by the organizing committee until the middle
of May according to the criteria listed above.
Tourmament Information:
Draw: The 12 teams in each of the
boys' and girs' categories start in preliminary pools of 4 teams. Preliminary
matches will be 2 rally point games to 25 points. Top two teams from
each preliminary pool advance to the championship pool of six teams
(match results against the other team advancing from your preliminary
pool carries into the championship play). Bottom two teams from each
preliminary pool drop into a consolation pool of six teams (match results
against the other team advancing from your preliminary pool carries
into the consolation play). Preliminary championship and consolation
pool matches are two games. Playoff matches will be the best two of
three games. Each team will be guaranteed three preliminary matches,
four championship or consolation matches and eight boys' and girls'
teams will be guaranteed two playoff matches. There will be a minimum
of 10 minutes warm-up on the court prior to each match. Major officials
will be assigned by S.V.O.O. (Saskatoon Volleyball officials organization).
Tie Breaking Procedure: outlined
by the C.V.A. Playoffs:
Teams will be ranked first to sixth after consolation and championship
pool play. The top four teams in each pool will enter their respective
playoffs. The semi-final match-ups will be 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3. Practice
Balls: Please bring your own clearly
marked balls. Entry fee:
The present Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association bylaw forbids
charging of entry fees for high school tournaments. Therefore, as of
now, there will be no entry fee charge.Awards:

Wrestling

|
Wrestling is a popular sport at Mount Royal. It appeals to people of
all sizes and shapes, boys and girls, grade 9's to grade 12's. At present
Mount Royal has a junior and senior team. Both teams learn techniques,
practice and scrimmage during the course of a practice. Wrestling starts
the first day back after Christmas holidays. The senior season ends
in late March and the junior season ends in early March. Practice is
everyday after school for seniors and everyday at noon for juniors.
There are several weekend tournaments and one dual a week for six weeks.
The wrestling room is the site of all practices. You will find it located
behind the weight room. The sport of wrestling provides a great workout
and provides an opportunity to meet new friends. No background skills
are needed. The willingness to learn and have fun are the only things
needed to start in the sport. The basic equipment requirement is gym
wear.

Intramural
Program
The Intramural Program takes place during the noon hour in both
of our gymnasiums and is open to all Mount Royal students. Intramurals provide
an opportunity for students to get together informally and participate in
physical activities.
The first time students come to the noon Intramural Program
they will be asked to present their timetable to the supervising teacher.
The last digit in their student number will place them into one of the following
houses:
0 - 1 Walker, 2 - 3 Tufts, 4 - 5
Penley, 6- 7 Smyth, 8 - 9 Perkins
Guidelines
The students must sign-in with the supervising
teacher. If they sign-in before 12:20 pm, they will receive 3 points. If they
sign-in any time after 12:20 pm, they will receive 1 point. The clocks in
each of the gymnasiums determine the time. Students can sign-out any time
before 12:55 pm. If students plan on using the weight room, they must sign-in
to the supervising teacher before they begin a workout. Points are only awarded
for lunch-hour activities not including extracurricular activities. After
school activities are not included in this program.
