Badminton

The primary objective of the junior badminton team is to introduce competitive badminton to as many students as possible given the constraints of available courts and gym times. Students trying out for the team do not have to have any special skills or requirements. It would be advantageous however, if they have already played the sport in elementary school or in their physical education class. All students in grades 9 and 10 may try out for the team regardless of previous skills. If large numbers of students try out, cuts are sometimes made. Practices are usually 1 1/2 hours long and are held 4 to 5 times per week. Times are dependant upon gym availability. Games are usually twice a week, with the season lasting 6 to 7 weeks. The playoff is a one evening tournament. Racquets and goggles are provided by the school but some students do bring their own to ensure their equipment is of the desired quality and fit. Students who make the team are expected to exhibit good sportsmanship and courtesy at all practices and games. Failure to do so can mean removal of playing privileges.

Mustang Volley

In 1986 Mount Royal amalgamated our annual senior girls' and boys' tournaments. M.R.I.T., our girls' tournament, already had a rich 14 year history while Mustang Volley, our boys' tournament, was inaugurated in 1985. The annual combined tournament, MUSTANG VOLLEY, will usually take place at Mount Royal on the third weekend in October. Teams will be guaranteed 7 two-game matches, plus the top four teams in championship and the top two in consolation play will be guaranteed two additional best of three matches. (There will be no bronze [3rd place match] for the consolation side.)

In keeping with M.R.I.T. tradition and the goals of Mustang Volley, the combined tournament has been designed with the intent to develop a high level of play. The organizing committee will consider teams based on the following priorities:

  • the top four senior girls' teams and the top three boys' teams in Saskatoon plus Mount Royal
  • out-of-province teams
  • Saskatchewan 5A, 4A, 3A 2A and 1A medallists
  • other Saskatchewan teams

Applications are accepted by the organizing committee until the middle of May according to the criteria listed above.

Wrestling

Wrestling is a popular sport at Mount Royal. It appeals to people of all sizes and shapes, boys and girls, grade 9's to grade 12's. At present Mount Royal has a junior and senior team. Both teams learn techniques, practice and scrimmage during the course of a practice. Wrestling starts the first day back after Christmas holidays. The senior season ends in late March and the junior season ends in early March. Practice is everyday after school for seniors and everyday at noon for juniors. There are several weekend tournaments and one dual a week for six weeks. The wrestling room is the site of all practices. You will find it located behind the weight room. The sport of wrestling provides a great workout and provides an opportunity to meet new friends. No background skills are needed. The willingness to learn and have fun are the only things needed to start in the sport. The basic equipment requirement is gym wear.

Intramural Program

The Intramural Program takes place during the noon hour in both of our gymnasiums and is open to all Mount Royal students. Intramurals provide an opportunity for students to get together informally and participate in physical activities.

The first time students come to the noon Intramural Program they will be asked to present their timetable to the supervising teacher. The last digit in their student number will place them into one of the following houses:

0 - 1 Walker, 2 - 3 Tufts, 4 - 5 Penley, 6- 7 Smyth, 8 - 9 Perkins

Guidelines

The students must sign-in with the supervising teacher. If they sign-in before 12:20 pm, they will receive 3 points. If they sign-in any time after 12:20 pm, they will receive 1 point. The clocks in each of the gymnasiums determine the time. Students can sign-out any time before 12:55 pm. If students plan on using the weight room, they must sign-in to the supervising teacher before they begin a workout. Points are only awarded for lunch-hour activities not including extracurricular activities. After school activities are not included in this program.
