Mount
Royal Child Care - Building a Future
Who
Are We
The Mount Royal Child Care centre is
operated by Saskatoon Child Care Services, a non-profit community
organization. Our daycare, located in Mount Royal Collegiate, was the
first child care centre in the province to open in a high school. We
have grown from a 10 infant care centre to a 22 space infant and
toddler program.
- back to
Child Care -
Did
you know
- Since the late 1970's, 90% of all
adolescent parents in North America have chosen to keep their
children rather than place them for adoption.
- A lack of opportunity for quality child
care often prevents teen parents from successfully completing
their high school education.
- Education is the single most important
factor in an individual's ability to achieve financial
independence.
- Teen parents who do not graduate from
high school often find themselves trapped in a life of poverty and
low self-esteem.
- An estimated 80% of girls who have
become mother at the age of 17 or younger do not complete high
school.
- back to
Child Care -
Our
Response
The Mount Royal Child care centre was
established in 1988 to help teen parents in their effort to earn a
high school education. We realize affordable and readily accessible
child care in a school setting makes it possible for young parents to
be more successful.
To prevent a serious disruption of
educational process, a baby is welcomed into the daycare as soon as
the parent is ready to return to school.
In our centre we provide a supportive
environment for parents and their children.
- back to
Child Care -
Our
Program
- Primary caregivers are used to allow a
bond to develop between staff, child and parent.
- Group and individualized programming are
provided.
- A speech/language pathologist provides
speech/language development screening.
- Children are cared for, played with,
read to, and loved.

Child Care -
Recognizing
Young Parents' Needs
- To address concerns about nutrition and
cooking skills, we have implemented a very popular Cooking
Club
- An incentive program has been developed
to acknowledge our parents' improved school attendance
- Parents who use our centre are enrolled
in the Life Transitions: Parent Class that provides positive
parenting information.
- back to
Child Care -
Our
Success
An independent research study of the Mount
Royal Child Care Centre found a positive relationship between our
daycare use and school achievement.
- Mothers using the daycare for at least
one semester had a graduation / retention rate of 85% compared to
38% for parents not using the daycare.
- The dropout rate for teens using the
other child care arrangements continued to be 50% to
70%.
- The dropout rate for teens using our
centre has never been higher than 33% and on several occasions has
been 0%

be at school. I would have had to drop out." -- A Young

Achievements

centre received the Saskatchewan Child Care Association's (SCCA)
Award of Excellence. This award is presently annually to a centre
that demonstrates excellence in quality childcare and education to
children and families.
- In 1998, Jane Wallace-Brown, the centre
director, was awarded Director of the Year by the SCCA. Jane was
also the Saskatchewan director profiled in a U.S. publication for
Child Care Directors.
- In 1998, Ellen Saccucci received the
Infant Caregiver of the Year Award from the SCCA. Ellen has been
with the centre since it opened in 1988.
