Principal’s Message
Welcome to Nutana Collegiate, a unique high school where the students, staff and many community partners work together to create a place where learning happens in a variety of innovative ways and academic success is available to all. We are proud of the accomplishments of our current and former students and strive to ensure that our programs and supports will provide the necessary foundation to assist students to continue to achieve their goals in education and in life. We are also pleased to work cooperatively with community agencies. Ours is a school that is linked in a common goal with these organizations to serve students and our community effectively.
The staff at Nutana has made exciting plans and important professional commitments for this school year. Our goals are to offer the very best educational experience to all students and one way that we intend to do that is through a practice called Assessment for Learning. Staff members are learning more about engaging students through improved assessment processes. We also have a strong commitment to the school division’s Literacy for Life program. This encourages students to read widely and improve their literacy skills. With this in mind, I encourage you to set a literacy/reading goal for this year and to hold yourself accountable to reaching that goal. Write this down in the space provide below in this planner. Please feel welcome to discuss these plans with our teacher librarian and ask for any assistance you need. We also encourage you to use this planner on a regular basis to keep track of your own important personal and academic dates.
Returning students will be aware of the special efforts that each of the school’s staff make to encourage students to be successful. New students will quickly realize that Nutana is a school where they are well known and made to feel welcome. I encourage all of you to work closely with our staff to gain as much as you can from your experience at our school. If you need something, have a suggestion or question, or would like to give your feedback about the school experience at Nutana, please speak to any staff member. You are, of course, welcome to come to the Main Office at any time to discuss these or other matters with Mr. Bradley, our Vice Principal, or myself. The voice of students is very important to what we do and how well we do it.
The school has four academies. An academy brings special designation to a program and emphasizes particular opportunities for students. An academy also helps the school to communicate what unique programming is available. We hope that our students will benefit from this special emphasis at Nutana. Our academies are:
- Tourism
- Career and Experiential Learning
- Community Engagement
- Academic Upgrading
We hope to provide you with an outstanding learning experience at Nutana. You, the students, have the most important part in reaching that goal. Ensure that you attend regularly, put in your very best effort, identify where you need help and work cooperatively with your teachers. There are many opportunities and rewards waiting for you to embrace. The big screen TV located in the main hallway will display daily student notices so that information is available to all. Please keep informed of school activities, events and announcements by reading this daily. We are committed to working together towards personal excellence in a safe, caring, respectful learning community.
You are now part of the proud traditions that have been developed at Nutana since 1910. The school will celebrate its 100th birthday in September of 2010 and a school reunion is planned for July 2 – 4, 2010. We have started major building renovations which will continue over the new couple of years. During construction the school will remain open and will continue to offer quality programming for students. It is an exciting time to be at Nutana!
