English as a Second (or other) Language (ESL) Support

English as a Second Language (ESL) class is for students who have recently moved to Canada and need help learning the English language. Students can take ESL for one or more hours a day.

Common Questions (FAQs):

Why should I take ESL classes?

ESL class helps new students to:

  • get used to school in a new country and culture
  • get help learning English at the level they need
  • make friends with supportive ESL students
  • get individual help in a small ESL class
  • get help with the language (reading and writing) in other subjects like History and Science
  • become independent learners

Can I start ESL part way through a year?

Yes, students can start part way through the year. Often students arrive after the school year has already started.  They can feel lost and confused with so many new places, people, and expectations to get used to.  The ESL teachers understand this and help out.

How long will I take ESL classes for?

Most new students will spend about three semesters in ESL class.

  • Semester One goes from late August to late January.
  • Semester Two goes from late January to late June.

The length of time students spend in ESL depends on how quickly students learn all forms of English and succeed in their regular classes.

Do I get a credit for ESL?

We offer two ESL classes at the Grade 10 level. They are for students at the intermediate language level. Students can register for ESL with the help of a guidance counselor and ESL teacher. Students may take an ESL credit class after they have spent two or three semesters in an ESL support class.
